3D City: Launching off Jones

Noel and I had just finished shooting a video for my comic book project, God Hates Dinosaurs, when we first met Toby Allender. He introduced himself as a BMX rider visiting from Australia and said he was on the hunt for a giant San Francisco hill that he could bomb on his bike. He saw our camera gear and stopped us to see if we’d like to help.

A couple hours later we were in Toby’s rental car driving around Russian Hill looking for a nice steep street and picking up any spare traffic cones we could find. We ended up at Jones and Union, a nice steep street with a nice flat section that would work great as a ramp. We set up some cameras, put on some orange vests, and waited for Toby’s signal once he was ready at the top of the hill. When he gave us the thumbs up, we placed the cones down at the intersection and kept our eye out for any cars pulling out of their parking lots.

I’d guess Toby was going about 40mph when he launched off of the intersection at Union, and he traveled about 40 feet before hitting the ground again. 15 minutes later we set it all up again for an even faster ride. Since I was in charge of blocking the intersection, I didn’t get to take many shots during the jump itself, but here are a few more from just before.

3D City: Bermuda

The beaches of Bermuda. From a recent trip filled with fish chowder, Cuban cigars, and overly sweetened rum drinks. Our local bar even had some dusty old bottles of Fernet on hand.

3D City: RT the Entertainer

RT the Entertainer is San Francisco’s premiere Flavor Flav impersonator and part time Zumba hype-man. He always brings a smile to my face when I’m hanging out downtown or on Portrero Hill, but this is the first time I bumped into him in our little neighborhood. Yeah boy!

3D City: Electric Dreaming

3D City is a year long stereoscopic photography project by Doctor Popular.

My friend Rusty has been working on an awesome new “email zine” called Rusty’s Electric Dreams. It’s a weekly email list filled with weird news stories, Bay Area events, and art and it’s pretty damn awesome. Each month, Rusty features a new artist-in-residence to work with and I’ve been lucky enough to be that featured artist for December.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been sharing these images exclusively through her zine and I’m thrilled to finally share them here with you guys. This collection has focused on the scenes and faces of San Franciscio, including the legendary Frank Chu, a rioter from this year’s Giant Series (not previously shown in my 3D City shots from that same night), The Green Door massage parlor, and an epic shot from our camping trip on the nearby Angel Island. There’s still one more piece to come in tomorrow’s issue of Electric Dreaming, so sign up here if you’d like to see it.

3D City: When it rains

Soak up some rainy day wigglegrams, courtesy of a rusty old Nimslo camera and a soggy roll of Ilford HP5. Speaking of, thanks to all the folks who have helped keep the film rolling by supporting 3D City’s Patreon project.

3D City: Color Mission

A bunch of scenes from right around Mission and 19th. Mission Jewelry & Loan, the old El Capitan marque, the skeleton of a bike, and ashes from a small church fire. Shot on a vivid roll of Kodak’s Portra film.

BTW, I’ve recently launched a Patreon for my stereoscopic photo project, thanks to everyone who’s kicked in so far and helped me reach the first goal.

3D City: Powell

15 minutes at Powell Street turnaround. I got to a downtown photo-walk 15 minutes early, so I snapped these shots (and a bunch others) all off while waiting for the walk to start. Crazy cause I never really had that much luck shooting there before.

This is the second roll of Ilford HP5 I’ve shot this month, and I think it works great for this project. The thing is that it’s rather expensive. The folks at Photoworks have been helping this project out with some deals on developing, but I wanted to ask you guys for help to. If you dig 3D city, kick in two bucks on my Patreon to help the good film coming.

3D City: Step by Step

Walk around photographing the city long enough and you’ll end up with plenty of photos of stairs. I was building up quite a collection and thought they deserved their own post.

3D City: Highs, Lows, Middles

My morning walk from the Mission to downtown is one of my favorite rituals. When shooting photos along the way, this walk takes about 30 minutes. Unless it’s raining, then I’ll be out for hours.

This batch was shot on my Nimslo 3D with a roll of Ilford HP5 (my default “foggy day” film) on a recent rainy morning, then dropped off at Photoworks on the walk back home where I’ll load up film for the next day’s walk.

3D City: Ring Mountain

Just outside of Tiburon is an amazing little hike along the Ring Mountain Open Space Reserve. A fantastic view of the bay, Mt Tam, and SF. Be sure to bring your climbing shoes and a roll of redscale film if you have it. It’d play nice with the colors you’d find there this time of year.
