Dolores Park playground ribbon cutting this Saturday

Well, the first major Dolores Park renovation is done, and it just so happens to be the section of the park you’re probably too old to hang out in. This Saturday, check out the ribbon cutting event from 2-4pm.

True to Dolores Park form, there will be a performance with Shredder Hoops, a troupe of scantly-clad women demonstrating their flexibility with flaming hula hoops:

Live music will be provided courtesy of Orange Sherbert, a family-friendly band that writes rap songs about the benefits of eating locally-sourced sustainable seasonal vegetables (no I didn’t just make that up):

Oh, and there’s face painting, if you’re into that. I personally don’t care for it, after the unicorn-whose-head-looked-a-lot-like-a-dick incident of 1986.

Free squash at Mi Ranchito Market

squash, food, garbage, mi ranchito market, san francisco, mission district, dumpster, dumpster diving

As in a trash bin full of squash. Savvy dumpster divers would be wise not to squander the opportunity!

It wasn’t me.  But at least it won’t take a crane.

Prolific tipster Raun has sent us a new area observation. Now open to debate: Does this Mission Street sign for Pizza Joint seem to advertise a much less delectable savory treat, the Pizza Taint? Raun’s graphic designer housemate thinks so.

Men working in the Mission

Melanie Ruiz put together a nice video portrait of men working in the Mission. Specifically the kind of working men who work outside.

Watch it big on Vimeo.

These goddamn hipsters are gentrifying our beloved startups right out of this city

Fear not, Mission purists, maybe these tech startups that you love to hate are on their way out, or so says this good-bye note that sexpigeon brought to our attention. Local startup Branch, some kind of conversation-having platform (’cause you know, who wants to go through the trouble of having a real one), laments:

San Francisco is just too nice. The nature is too accessible, the architecture is too Victorian, and the weather is too perfect. The quality of life here is unrivaled. But I feel like I haven’t earned that yet. One day, I’ll bike across the bridge and meet my family at Mill Valley Beerworks.

For now, I miss the grit and grime of New York. It is real and raw, and the commotion of the city is contagious. Startup life is characterized by constant motion and tenacious tinkering, not hikes on Mt. Tam and brunch in the Mission, and the pace of life and breadth of humanity in New York is invigorating. I like to tell people: New York is like coffee. You know it’s not good for you, and you don’t really like the taste, but you just can’t get enough. The rush, the jitters, they’re addicting, as are startups.

Large Marge is.

Area superhero cleans up these streets one window rap at a time

SF Mission Protector” posted this video busting a local graffiti artist last night:

In all fairness, the dude knocks on the window twice to let the guy know that he’s gonna call the cops. But this kid just waves and carries on putting a bird on it (“it” being a wall in this case). The cops show up and grab him.

Who is this mysterious “SF Mission Protector”? Does anyone know any orphaned billionaire business owners around the ‘hood?
