Envisioning a revitalized Bartlett Street

There’s an effort underway to turn the section of Bartlett between 21st and 22nd — the stretch that’s home to the Mission Community Market on Thursdays — into a more inviting public space. This effort kicked off officially with a community meeting last night, and Mission Local was there:

“We can have fun for a moment with these ideas,” said Jeremy Shaw, Mission Community Market’s executive director.

They can have fun because revitalizing the dejected block on Bartlett from 21st to 22nd Street has potential funding now. Shaw, design group Rebar and CARECEN are working with the developer of the Giant Value site and New Mission Theater on an “in-kind agreement.” Project developers can satisfy their public impact fees by making agreements with community groups that provide public improvements. Shaw and Rebar designer John Bela think they can get $500,000 to revitalize the backside of the new development, Bartlett Street.

Is this supposed to be a giant ‘KKK’?

Because if it is, not cool. (Or I guess it could be our pal KKR? Anyone?) Props on the height though.

Popo’s Pizza replacing soon to be shuttered Pizza Di Mano

The following BREAKING PIZZA NEWS comes courtesy of MM reader Jason K:

Pizza Di Mano (3331 24th Street) is closing on May 25th.

New owners, Popo’s Pizza and Brew, will take over immediately thereafter. Popo’s is the same owner as the former West Oakland location. He’ll be serving unique pizzas (Mango Prosciutto for one!), BBQ Ribs, Rotisserie Chicken and they will be brewing their own beer. They will re-open on June 1st.

I for one was never a fan of pizza from poor Pizza Di Mano, despite my initial hopes back when they opened over two years ago.  Even multiple Jamesons across the street at the Attic weren’t enough to sway me once I had tasted the uninspired pie.  While this new place doesn’t appear to be offering slices and consequently won’t be challenging Arinell for the best slice in SF crown, perhaps they can offer Serrano’s some healthy competition. Because everyone knows you can never have too many pizza places in the Mission!

Mission Dispatch is up and running

This was the scene at the new food truck spot on 18th and Bryant yesterday. It’s a nice sunny courtyard just north of 18th, and hopefully will be a good food option in the area. I used to work on that block, and there’s only so much Tortilla Flats a man can take. 11-2, Monday through Friday.

The Brass Knuckle food truck. Note the Occupy SF fries, $8.

Suitcase found containing 80 severed heads

Our pal Wesley came upon the unsettling scene:

Suitcase found with 80 severed heads, at 18th and Guerrero. The Mission really is Little Mexico.

Insensitive, Wes!

Lube wrestling pics will make your insides squirm

The Bold Italic just published a big feature on El Rio’s monthly lube wrestling party, with gorgeous photos and astute reportage by our boy Joshua Cobos:

I’ve found myself there on a handful of occasions, slack-jawed and bewildered at sights that made my insides squirm with conflicting emotions. Watching women romp around in red latex, splashing it up in an inflatable pool, is my inner sailor’s dream come true. Add liquor and lube, and that fantasy becomes exhilarating – until, of course, the substances splash toward me, at which time that dream turns into a nightmare.

Guerilla culture-jammers slam local bakery

Here’s the latest in a series of shocking fake ad campaigns that have been popping up on Muni buses. The text reads: “Fartine Bakery & Cafe. Wait in line for five hours to buy a fucking donut.” Someone should smash the windows of that place before they sell any more pastries.
