Junior Senior spotted in Dolores Park

Now let’s watch the unforgettable video for their unforgettable 2002 superhit “Move Your Feet”:

(Also, dang, I wish the park looked this good today.)

Iconic Coca-Cola sign currently implores SF to ‘Enjoy Coc,’ possibly in celebration of Pride Month?

Same thing on both sides! Had no idea Coca-Cola was such a sexed-up megacorporation! We checked with SFist editor Brock Keeling, whose offices are just blocks from the sign, to confirm that this was a new phenomenon, and this is what he said:

Brock: Allan, it’s Pride month. Of course it’s going to say that

Of course! So yeah, enjoy, everybody!

22 GIANTS!

Sunday Streets!

Is today! In the Mission! If you love it, see you there! If you hate it, avoid it! And remember, this is just the second of four Mission editions of Sunday Streets happening this summer!

Now here’s a picture of Bush Bike:

La Grotta fails to delight our discerning palates

Josh and I checked out this new Italian place within Mission Market last night. The whole experience was eerie, starting with the overeager bystander/good Samaritan ushering us forcefully around the corner onto 22nd toward the entrance. We walked down the tiled hallway into an expansive dining room (35 tables or so) that was completely empty. La Grotta is not really cavelike (it’s officelike) but it is cavernous. Another patron walked in with us and tentatively sat down at one of the bar tables, but he bailed, which is no easy task in a restaurant with audible pin drops. Josh and I soldiered on.

No booze yet, so we tried the water. We started with the Mesa Platter because it’s damn impressive looking. Unfortunately the meats were tres lunch-meat and the vegetables tasted like vegetables. The bruschetta was very good, well-toasted and nicely garlicky.

Josh had the eggplant lasagna and I had the spaghetti and meatballs. The water line in my bowl was around 67% of capacity. The sauce tasted good, nice and basily, and the pasta was cooked reasonably well. The meatballs were bland and the consistency of matzo balls. Josh found the eggplant bitter and the lasagna ok, but who can trust him, he’s just getting over a cold.

I take no delight in disparaging an unpretentious Italian restaurant in the neighborhood; if it were even pretty good I would eat here every day. Cheap Italian is rarely mastered. Josh’s suggestion was that they offer $2 drafts from 6-9, which I agree might be the ticket to Bean-Bag-sized success.

On the upside, nothing was gross, the service was good and the place was clean. And most of all, I was so full that I could hardly get through my beer half an hour later, which actually sucked because everyone else at the Attic was wasted.

Oh and they had this really good hipster boxing show on the T.V., so that was a plus.

Terry Malts and friends at the Knockout tonight!

If you’re too timid to make the trek out of the Mission tonight to check out Berlin ping pong at the Rickshaw, never fear, because there’s something for you at the Knockout instead!  Local faves Terry Malts (who even get to use their real name this time!) are joined by The Smell, Broonies, and Life Stinks for a rad night of rock & roll.  Sadly, Nu Sensae had to drop out at the last minute, but the rest of the lineup is sure to knock your socks off!  Come out and get weird!

Mission Vegan: SF Vegan Drinks at Dr. Teeth

This is a strawberry-basil caipirinha. No, there is nothing in a regular caipirinha that makes it non-vegan. This did not stop SF Vegan Drinks at Dr. Teeth and the Electic Mayhem from featuring the same on its menu today, nor did it stop me from ordering and devouring one! I guess they just thought that since vegans love fresh produce we’d appreciate having it served in a cocktail? Whatever their reasoning, it worked on me, and I’m usually a tough sell.

There’s also nothing about tater tots that makes them un-vegan, unless they’re coated in animal secretions, but sweet potato tater tots are another Vegan Drinks upgrade I happily fell for. The first basket of tots to arrive at my table was neither vegan (they were dusted with cheese) nor made of sweet potato. Remember last week when we talked about how it’s tough to rely on things you order in restaurants to be vegan? That’s still true even at an event with vegan in the title! I sent them back politely and waited what seemed like months to get my order. When they came, though, they were great, and the waitress brought me a free vegan white Russian with them for making me wait so long, which was sweet of her and delicious to me.

Dr. Teeth:
Kitchen ≠ reliable
Servers = nice
Food and drink ideas = good (especially at Vegan Drinks!)
Back patio = Really nice (cornhole and skee-ball)

DJ Wam Bam Ashleyanne brings a little bit o’ SOUL to the Berlin-style ping pong scene this Saturday night!

This is gonna be big. Ashleyanne was on the decks for last fall’s epic American Tripps Halloween party (pretty party pics here) and she brought the house down. This time, the party’s at Rickshaw Stop, which means dancing on the main stage, two ping pong tables, foosball and skeeball on the upstairs mezzanine, and lots of Rickshaws to lounge in. Plus, it’s just rare that we get to play ping pong along to some classic soul music. All 45s, all night long! RSVP and invite your friends!

(Also, it’s basically gonna a nonstop dance marathon this weekend. Tonight, Ashleyanne guests at Oldies Night. Tomorrow afternoon, it’s Hard French at El Rio from 3-8. Then it’s SOUL AND PING PONG from 8-1. Then it’s full-on rave time at Haçeteria until 3!)
