Trees for all!

Friends of the Urban Forest want to give you a tree! Here’s how it works:

Mission residents have until October 1 to sign up to receive a street tree in the planting that Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF) is organizing for November 8.  Residents who have eligible sites in front of their homes and businesses can save approximately 75% of the total tree planting costs by participating in FUF’s neighborhood tree planting program; most of the costs are covered by grants, government funding and private donations.

Sign up here!

(No guarantee the tree you get will be as cool as the Ghostbusters ghost tree, originally photographed by Ariel Dovas.)

In response to the ‘Capp Street Is for Hookers’ shirt

Some shirt last week was all, “Capp Street is for hookers.” I got to thinking about it, and, I disagree.

Historically, and increasingly, Capp is for bloggers. There’s tech blogger (and former Mission Mission writer) Kevin Montgomery who lives on Capp Street, there’s longtime Mission Mission writer (and Secret Alley founder) Ariel Dovas who often works out of the Secret Alley on Capp Street, nowadays you’ve got Mr. Justice broadcasting Burrito Justice Radio from the Secret Alley, and new on the scene is Amy who writes Capp Street Crap, etc., etc., etc. We even had an official Mission Mission staff meeting at the Uptown on Saturday! It’s all about being up on the Capp tip, y’all!

So who wants to buy this shirt? It’s a American Apparel. Get one here.

Here’s what it looks like on a guy:

Department of Public Works defines what is and isn’t art

Art is a tricky thing to define. As we all know. Or maybe we don’t. I find it a lot easier to recognize what is art than what isn’t. Today I got into a debate with a Twitter account for DPW’s Zero Graffiti program. What strikes me the most about Zero Graffiti SF‘s argument here is the implication that acknowledging that something is art is to condone it or qualify it in a positive way. I understand that the city doesn’t want people tagging where they’re not supposed to (pretty much everywhere), but I wonder why they won’t call it art. Or rather, why they specifically decide to say that it’s not.

Muni Diaries Live!

Here’s the deal:

Where do the most unbelievably gross, heartwarming, funny, and weird stories happen in San Francisco? On Muni, of course. Hear tales from comedian Nato Green, SFGate Culture Blog writer Beth Spotswood, filmmaker H.P. Mendoza, writer Tarin Towers, story maven Kay deMartini, and enjoy the musical stylings of Female Trouble. Plus, you’ll learn the answer to an important question: will reigning Muni Haiku champion, James Nestor, finally be unseated by MDL favorite Jesse James?

We’re giving away a gift certificate to Tony’s Pizza Napoletana and merch from local indie musical favorite Lucky Jesus, so get your own stories ready!

RSVP and invite your friends! Tickets are here.

And to get in the mood, let’s all go back and watch our own Ariel Dovas, live on the Muni Diaries Live stage a few years back, telling a story of young love:

Burrito Justice Radio, live on BFF.fm right now!

As we learned in last week’s in-depth look at BFF.fm, the station is largely devoted to music — but “Burrito Justice Radio,” airing today from noon-2pm, will be all about news, maps, history, GIFs, Shrinky Dinks, bridges, hockey and other obsessions. And maybe a little bit of music. In short: everything you love about Burrito Justice!

Tune in: http://BFF.fm
