Indian Summer BBQ at El Rio this Saturday!

Inclement weather bumming you out?  Don’t worry, it’s just a diversion.  Don’t think for one second that our Indian summer is over with!  Trust me, there’s plenty more where that came from, and what better way to enjoy it than by imbibing a margarita on El Rio’s sunny patio while a bunch of rad bands belt out the jamz?  Throw in some tasty BBQ and you’ve got all the makings of a fantastic Saturday afternoon!  And what a lineup!  Let’s see, we’ve got local faves Terry Malts, Sweat Lodge featuring Rocky whose Frybread continues to kill it, Big Drag with Josh Cobos of Bad Blood fame, and the just-added Broonies!

Check out all the details plus RSVP and invite your friends here.

Drink of the week: Fernet in Buenos Aires

Drink of the week: travel edition continues with a dispatch from Buenos Aires, the only place I know of that likes Fernet Branca anywhere near as much as we do. (My relatives from Italy, Fernet’s home country, don’t go near the stuff.)  Here in BA, it’s mainly mixed with Coke and consumed in the hours between dinner and sunrise. After a few tries, though, I’ve convinced bartenders to pour me a shot. “Sin coca?” “Si, sin Coca.” “Sin hielo?!?” “Si, sin hielo.”

I’m half convinced it tastes different, and better, here in Argentina. It’s smoother, slightly less mouthwashy, and it still dries your mouth out, but not quite so violently. It’s produced domestically here, so it’s certainly possible. But maybe I’m just imagining things. One thing is exactly the same as in S.F. though – out of the people I’ve spoken to, no one can explain why they drink it.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Vera Again

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

So much has happened since the last bad blood. I left my minimum wage day job to pursue freelance work, I lost a great friend to fate or something vague like that, consequently I have been listening to just about every album in the 4AD catalogue. Here’s a series of Vera again.

Thanks, Joshua! Ten more shots after the jump:

The Mission in Polaroids

Over the past year, Polaroid SF has shot 366 photos of San Francisco taken through the lenses of vintage Polaroid Land cameras, and 50 of them are of the Mission (and at least one of them was inspired by one of our blog posts). This month, they’re bringing their project to the walls of Photobooth on Valencia. The show will be up until the 29th, and there will be an opening reception a week from tomorrow on October 19th, 7-10pm.

Dawn Penn pre-party at the Makeout Room tonight

First of all, if you don’t know Dawn Penn, she is the singer on this classic reggae scorcher (which uses the tritone to great effect):

She’s playing in Oakland at the Uptown (not to be confused with the bar on Capp St.) tomorrow night, backed by the bay’s own ska rocksteady group Franco Nero.

There’s a pre-party tonight from 10pm-2am the Makeout Room, with the always boss DJs from SF Vintage Reggae Society and Revival Soundsystem. Blackwell rum is sponsoring it with rum tastings, if you’re into the two drinks that can be made with rum.

And just what exactly is a Rock and Roll Carnival, you ask?  Well, allow our pal Broke-Ass Stuart to explain:

There’s 4 bands, DJs, a magician, comedians, burlesque, face painting, fortune telling and Skee-Ball.

Woah there, you had me at Skee-Ball! Not to mention the free whiskey for the first hour.  And the date is 10/11/12!!!  It’s all going down at Public Works, and you can check out all the details here.
