Continues tonight with opener Windham Flat (who we took a look at a few months back but still haven’t seen live).
Battlehooch loves to get crazy, and there’s nothing crazier than a monthlong residency, so everything on the above announcement is bound to be funnn.
Oakland-based musician Michael Zapruder‘s new album, Pink Thunder, is quite the creative feat. The album itself, six years in the making, transforms poems by 23 poets into “indie-rock free-verse songs” in collaboration with 36 musicians, and is accompanied by a book of photographs and hand-lettered renderings of the poems involved. Zapruder has also created a series of portmanteaus, found object sculptures with built-in music players (engineered by our friend Mark Allen-Piccolo!). Each portmanteau plays one song from the album.
Pink Thunder’s release party and gallery opening is tomorrow, October 18th at the Curiosity Shoppe, and the portmanteaus will be showing through November 18.
[Thanks, Melody!]
Anybody got a kid I can borrow? I want to eat all of those things. (And connect the dots.)

It’s always nice when a potentially frightening scene is quickly resolved with particular badassness by our city’s finest, as reader and eyewitness Nikki explains:
Tonight my boyfriend when out on our patio to check on our dog when he noticed bright flashing lights and smoke rising from what had to be our street. Then we heard a girl screaming. We went out in the front to see what was going on, and the hood of her car was on fire, the flames doubling in size within a few minutes. The girl was pleading for someone to get a fire extinguisher, but before anyone was able to get one, the SFFD arrived, extinguished the fire, and axed the hood of the car to get it open. Total badasses.
(Thanks Nikki!)

Never be lost in Dolores Park again! “Hey, where are you?” “D4, you?” “B3, you sunk my battleship!”
Our pal Valerie (pictured) reports:
ken ken ramens/suika’s fancy $40 plant from flora grubb stolen from outside their store 3x. Who’s responsible? Angry neighbors? Hipsters? Homeless hipsters?
They’ve tried chaining it down, adding rocks etc. plant theif won’t give it up. Everyone be on high alert for some sexy succulent looking thing!!!
Sad! And just when things were going so good for Ken Ken/Suika!
It’s like French onion soup but in a sandwich, with roast beef that melts in your mouth! This is me eating one on Treasure Island yesterday (or… wait, what day is it?) (anyway…), but you can eat one everyday (and I think I’m gonna eat one everyday) at The Galley.
The Bold Italic takes a look at Suika, the Ken Ken offshoot just opened on 18th near Mission:
What’s special about Suika is that it has no set menu. “Everyday is different,” said chef Taka. “We decide on the menu the night before.” He likes to get experimental, so customers can experience all the endless bento combinations. The only thing you can count on is that there will always be a meat, fish, and veggie option available. Some past creations include saba (mackerel), pumpkin croquette, kimchi pork, minced beef katsu, and even hamburger bento. Each lunchbox also comes with assorted sides such as rice, tamago (egg), burdock potato salad, hijiki seaweed, nasu eggplant, or kabocha squash.
They’ve also got desserts and Boba Guys boba drinks. Read on for lots more info and pics.
