Warm Leatherette danz partie tonight at SUB-Mission

 

Tonight the Mission’s only dance nite devoted to dark dirges and subaltern urges returns to Sub-mission. Here’s what they’ve got to say -

“For our April edition, Warm Leatherette is firing up its body machinery for an all-DJ night of recorded synth bedlam. Your Warm Leatherette Resident Selectors will present mixes of the finest minimal electronics and synth punk, while inviting you to gaze long and hard into the inky depths with a guest DJ set from BIXU, Chief Curator at kindred spirit party H O LES.”

Drink of the Week: Buck Yeah

As may have been mentioned, KronnerBurger is the best thing. Unfortunately, somebody blabbed about it and now I have to wait for a table when I go there. Fortunately, it’s not hard to pass the time, because the third best thing about KB (which is the best thing) is their bangin’ cocktail selection, which includes such classics as the Carbonated Mother Fucking Margarita and the Scotcholate Milk. (The best thing is the burger, and the second best thing is the onion rings. The onion rings are seriously among the best I’ve ever had and come in a huge portion for $6. Go ahead and hate on that, you monster.)

Continuing the twin traditions of punny and profanity-laced cocktail-naming, the most recent addition to the menu is entitled the Buck Yeah. I was like “I’m gonna order that one” and then Ariel was like “what’s in that” and I was like “well, a buck is a kind of drink, it’s like a whiskey and ginger ale, I think, or like, it’s similar to a mule, y’know, like a Moscow mule, although that’s vodka, so…” and then I realized I don’t really know what a buck is. But this one is basically mezcal, lemon juice, fresh ginger, and soda in a tall glass, ideally served alongside a burger and onion rings. Another example of 2013′s hottest new trend: cocktails to eat meat with.

Adobe Books will live on, in a new space on 24th Street!

The Will Brown art collective spilled the beans on Facebook an hour ago:

Will Brown is excited to hear that Adobe Books is moving to our hood! Adobe Books signed their lease for their new home at 3130 24th Street between Folsom and Shotwell! They’re opening in June!

“Big news and hopefully true. 24th Street would be bookstore alley,” says reader Alissa who sent us the tip, “It would be excellent for Adobe and the neighborhood.” Agreed!

UPDATE: Yup, here’s an official announcement from Adobe:

We’ve got some very exciting news to share. Adobe Books has officially signed a lease for our new home at 3130 24thStreet between Folsom and Shotwell! We’re so happy to find a beautiful new space in the Mission District where the new Adobe Books and Arts Cooperative can thrive!

Though we won’t officially be moving until June, to get a head start on getting to know our neighbors, Adobe Books will be participating in this weekend’s Mission Sunday Streets. Please come and support our new store! We’ll be there between 11am – 4pm with a selection of used books, some friendly faces from the coop group, and Andrew with his camera.

Oh cool, yeah, Sunday Streets starts this weekend too!

Mr. T experiences

Local artists Dennis Kernohan and Steve MacDonald have been collaborating on some new works (among them these Mr. T-themed pieces), and they’ve got an opening tomorrow at FAZE on 21st Street (not Faye’s on 18th Street). Says Dennis:

This will be Steve MacDonald’s first show in 3 years. My third show in 5 months. There will be plenty of new work by both of us. Some PBR cases, thanks to Bryan Whalen. A raffle for a collaboration piece by Steve & I. Tickets for the raffle are 2$ for 1 ticket and 5$ for 3 tickets. Raffle proceeds will be donated to the local YMCA and/or Columbia Park Boys & Girls Club. So come early and stay late.

Show runs until April 25th.

It looks like one or all of the Mr. T pieces will be part of the raffle, so you might wanna try your luck. RSVP and invite your friends!

Nacho talk

SFist editor Brock Keeling wants to talk about nachos:

[W]hy weren’t nachos the thing to eat in 2012? Why aren’t there nachos everywhere at all times and on all menus right now? And how did you let this happen? Now that baseball season is here, we seek heaps of nachos — real nachos, with drizzly (and, indeed, sometimes orange-colored!) cheese! — but fail to find a plethora of options.

The world’s dearth of nacho establishments is harrowing and, presumably, due in large part to the fact that you can make them at home. Simply layer tortilla chips, salsa, optional beef, and cheese (people who don’t layer are assholes) and then shove in the broiler or, in a pinch, the microwave. Usually the microwave.

As for going out? We like the nachos at Louie’s, as seen above. They’re perfectly base; similar to the nachos one might find at a ballpark. They come to you crispy, but then, around the 5th inning or so, turn fork-tender. That’s the sweet spot, folks, when you can start eating them with a fork. Failing Louie’s, we lap up Tango & Stache’s high-grade take on nachos, which boast smoked provolone cheese sauce, Vermouth baked beans, and bacon fat tortilla chips.

Lots of neighborhood ping pong news (more ping pong news than you’re probably prepared to handle)

I’m sorry but ping pong is my favorite thing (other than blogging), so brace yourself:

  1. Tonight, and every Thursday night, is Ping Pong Nite at El Rio.

  2. We mentioned before that this Friday is Singin’ & Pingin’ at Verdi Club, but the new news is that Rocky of Rocky’s Frybread will be cooking up frybread out front!

  3. Sunday night, Rice Paper Scissors is doing a popup dinner at Dear Mom, while the SF Berlin-Style Ping Pong League hosts a casual party in the back room to promote (and sign people up for) their upcoming new season.

  4. Monday night, the SF Berlin-Style Ping Pong League’s new season kicks off at SoMa StrEat Food Park, 7-10pm. Sign up online or at the Sunday night Dear Mom thing.
