SF Secret Histories map

We love rad maps of San Francisco, and here’s one I haven’t seen before: “Secret Histories Map of San Francisco“. It’s so rad, in fact, that we will excuse the unfortunate misspelling ”Delores Park”.

A note from the artist Deth P. Sun, who debuted this piece in 2009:

Marci and I and a bunch of other friends were asked by the San Francisco Arts Commission to make work around the theme of “Trace Elements”. The idea around “Trace Elements” or what I took from it was how people don’t know about the history of things that they might pass by on the street, or how things got to where they were at and how things might have been forgotten (yeah, like Frodo and the Ring, only not). So I thought I’d make a Secret Map of San Francisco.

On the site, there are a lot of close-ups and more detailed information, some which you might know (Golden fire hydrant!) and some that you might not (the fortune cookie was invented here!). Give yourself an hour to take it in this afternoon.

I guess this begs the question: where can we score a print?

Thursday Night Live is back at the Eagle, this week with Luke Sweeney and Dreamdate’s Anna Hillburg

And it’s been back for quite a while now, too, starting with kickoff show over a month ago with our friends Reliics and going strong ever since, urinal troughs and all.  This week is no exception either, as our pals Anna Hilburg and Luke Sweeney offer a calmer yet no less poignant view of things.

Can’t wait to see the Oh Sees here again!

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Easter

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

My Yashica D kicked the bucket a couple weeks back. A good TLR is hard to find on the cheap, repairs almost never come back with a 100% working camera either. Luckily a friend of mine acquired some new cameras so I was able to finish this series with her old Yashica A. Sally’s Easter party, an old friend came up to visit from the OC, some behind the scenes looks at projects I’ve worked on & a trip to Lake Merritt with Rachel Duffy.

Thanks, Joshua! Nine more shots after the jump:

ICYMI: The Dwarves play Free Cocaine at Sunday Streets

Undesirable room with drumset, cat, loud couple and sink full of dishes.

Hey, at least they’re being honest! The worst is when someone writes a gleaming account of their domicile, and everything looks good when you check it out, but then you find out about their midnight trombone rehearsals a week into living there.

And now that I think of it, I bike by this apartment every night on my way home from work, and I’ve definitely heard a band practicing, so story checks out.

The Secret Alley’s new space – The Galallery/Type-O Gallery

The Secret Alley (where I am a co-founder) is an art space here in the neighborhood. A Kickstarter has just been launched to remake the dull lobby into a sweet space to show of the work of local talent, The Galallery, also to be known as The Typoe Gallery.

The Secret Alley is a strange and maybe magical place where people build things, make movies, paint, screen things, make presentations, play and generally have a good time making and doing weird stuff. It’s hard to describe and I do it no justice by trying.

For the past few years there have been Halloween installations in the lobby downstairs, maybe you saw the Death Ray, where you could use the interface to blow up local hot spots (the subwoofer under the seat really made you feel like you might just poop):

Death Ray!

Or the hallway monster the year before, which was just part of a larger dungeon theme:

There have also been some other art shows in the lobby, but the space does nothing to showcase the work. It’s not inspiring. It’s not amazing. It’s lame. Just as we brought our talented friends together to build the 360º old alleyway set, now it’s time to build out the lobby. When we started building The Alley seven years ago we did it on our own dimes, but it’s still costing us, and we kind of don’t have the dimes to expand. Plus we want to pay our friends fairly for their time. They’re really good at what they do. That’s where you come in.

If you’ve ever enjoyed spending some time there, or if you want to, or even if it’s not your cup of tea, please consider helping the talented crew create an amazing space to showcase local work. There are some really cool perks you can get for your contribution, including having the place to yourself for a night for you and your friends (pitch in together and have a grand time!). We don’t have the money of Jack Spade NYC, but we want to keep cool places in our hood!

Check out the Kickstarter here!

Please share with your friends, followers, readers, likers and hangers-on!
