Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Portraits and Patterns and Maybe an Alternate Reality

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

Ash & I took a trip to Sausalito, the ferry ride there helped me visualize an alternate reality that I’m hoping to create in a future collection. Bits and gasps can be seen here, the last photograph being an example of that vision. The Matildas were on tour, we happened to have room for them to stay at our house during that time. The middle of this set is a familiar theme of mine, patterns, more specifically how all patterns seem to have this organic natural state to them, which may reflect on my interest in sea life & primordial creatures. Other unspecified portraits were taken around downtown or Chinatown in celebration of the Year of the Snake.

Thanks, Joshua! (Can’t wait for this alternate reality thing!) Eight more shots after the jump: (more…)

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Early Morning Dog Walks

Every now and then, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this installment:

I was dog sitting on 23rd St recently so every morning I’d wake up at 6 or 7 and walk around the neighborhood. There’s a series of hedges on 24th St that I thought would be cool to showcase here. I also should mention the film, Kodak E100G, such a shame that Kodak discontinued making slide film.

Agreed! Thanks, Joshua! Eight more shots (including some lovely hedges) after the jump: (more…)

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Three Different Rolls of Ektar 100

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

Technically this is three different rolls of Ektar 100 shot on a Yashica D, a medium format square frame camera with 12 exposures per roll. I shot my youngest sister in the cul-de-sac where I grew up, my other sister is posing lit by her car’s high beams. Brittany helped me experiment with some smoke bombs I found in Chinatown. Katie, Ashley, Shannon & I went out to look for Sutro Sam, he wasn’t around. Ashley Pamela hangs out in Union Square & helped me style black & white lace shoot with Kerri.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Evil Children and Partygoers

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

Right around the end of December I went into Tiny Telephone to record a single with Big Drag. My photographs of Boo and Ashley are directly influenced by the subject matter of Nobuyoshi Araki’s early work found in Sentimental Journey. A friend gets me into the SFMoMa sometimes so I go there and hang around till it’s almost empty. Special shout out to the Christmas Krampus, scaring evil children and partygoers for all time.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: The Subtle Details of the Photograph

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

Recently my focus has been on subtle details of the photograph. A strong subject still anchors the canvas but the concentration has been on the negative space, what I’ve tucked into corners or cropped out. This week’s set features Ashley, the Boo, Swagger Like Us, Rachel, Fauve & a shoot directed/styled by Chantel Beam.

Thanks, Joshua! Ten more shots (and a complete list of past installments of “Bad Blood”) after the jump:

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Special Occasions

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this batch:

I use AGFA black and white film for special occasions, a film they stopped producing right about the time I graduated high school. Back then I was working in an Orange County photo lab that was full of AGFA films, now i’m down to my last 12 rolls. Analogue photography requires time, experimentation, patience, constant self critique and the willingness to refine and question your technique.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Fancy

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about the above shot:

I’ve been taking photographs of Fancy for the past 4, 4 1/2 years. I’ve seen many transformations, lots of different stage names & hair colors take place in these 4 short years. The lady has only become more self assured, dynamic & vivacious as time has gone on, this is the last photograph I took of her before she left to London.

Thanks, Joshua!

So much has happened since the last bad blood. I left my minimum wage day job to pursue freelance work, I lost a great friend to fate or something vague like that, consequently I have been listening to just about every album in the 4AD catalogue. Here’s a series of Vera again.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: People Close to Me [NSFW]

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

When I walk around shooting street photos I’m usually looking for shadows & lines, hardly ever people. The shots I find people in are more intimate, people close to me, places with strong memories. Our show at Cafe Du Nord, Boo sitting on the bed watching me, Margot with candy lips at the diner. I recommend getting glossy prints too.
