Sick unintentional YOLO number plate

(Pretty sure it’s unintentional.) (They call them “number plates” in Australia.) (For lots more Aussie, see my handy guide.)

The final Black Jeans show, tonight at Haçeteria!

Haçeteria is always a killer party, but tonight is extra special because it is our last chance to see the great Black Jeans live on stage!

Russell Butler has been recording and performing under the moniker Black Jeans for the past 4 years. His sound pulls from various elements of minimal synth, electro, and techno while retaining a cathartic emotional core. Russell will be hanging up the Black Jeans handle with one final techno-infused live hardware set at the Haceteria, which will give a sense of some of the post-Black Jeans directions he is planning on heading in.

Bats on Bats on BART

Reader Byron sent us this pic of someone getting a couple handfuls of Batman in the BART station. Most likely the brooding hero was making his way back to the cave from the Superhero Street Festival last Saturday.

Byron adds:

It was at the 24th Bart street station
The person in the batman outfit was really intoxicated and was posing for pictures

You can see pictures from past Superhero Street Festivals on their site.

“America’s greatest karaoke” descends from Portland to invade the Knockout tonight!

I know, DJ Purple is pretty damn rad, and we still think he’s the best DJ (not just KJ) in the city, but apparently this dude from Portland records his own songs and is the guy from whom DJ Purple gets his music!  The New York Times even went as far as to declare Baby Ketten “America’s greatest karaoke,” but why don’t you just come and judge for yourself tonight at the Knockout!

Drink of the Week: Monkey Monster, neat

You take a little bit of Monkey Shoulder and blend it with a little bit of Peat Monster and voila: Monkey Monster! It’s pretty good.

Map party!

You’ve seen this version of the “Bikes to Books” map, published previously in the SF Bay Guardian, but reporter Nicole Gluckstern, Burrito Justice and City Lights Books are releasing a museum-quality version. And this Sunday they’re making an all-day party of it:

Twenty-five years after the street-naming proposal was passed by the then the Board of Supervisors, local author and city cyclist Nicole Gluckstern devised a bike route connecting all twelve streets into a comprehensive bike tour, and enlisted avid amateur historian Burrito Justice for the creation of an interactive, multi-functional map, recently published in an abridged form in The San Francisco Bay Guardian. The two-sided, full color map published in collaboration with City Lights, is appropriate for use as a navigational tool, a history lesson, and a unique work of art in its own right.

Bike Tour details for October 6:
Meet on the North side of Jack London Street at South Park from 10:30 am.
Tour will commence at 11:00 am sharp.
Tour will end at approximately 2 pm outside City Lights Bookstore, at Jack Kerouac Alley in North Beach.
Cost = Free! (bring your own water/snacks)

Reading details for October 6:
Meet in Jack Kerouac Alley from 2-4 pm for a celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Street-naming project and a release party for “Bikes to Books” map, sponsored by the City Lights Foundation.
Cost = Free!
