New issue of Doctor Popular’s photo zine is out!

Doc Pop‘s first one was nothing but great shots of San Francisco. The second one is something completely different:

Today I’m proud to announce that the second issue of my American Analog zine is available online! To create this issue I set a goal of traveling to NYC and spending 3 solid days walking EVERYWHERE and capturing whatever I could. It was much more stressful than doing a “best of SF” type book, like my first issue, but the end result turned out great!

See inside and order copies here.

Horrifying scene at Rickshaw Stop’s 10th anniversary party

Rickshaw Stop‘s weeklong 10th anniversary bash kicked off last night with a rip-roaring show by the Spits. The drummer was a definite highlight, as usual.

The festivities continue tonight with Mikal Cronin, Cool Ghouls, and Cocktails! And tickets are almost gone! Get ‘em here! (Geographer and YACHT are totally sold out already, so better get on that Craigslist.)

Think about it

This is my favorite new Twitter personality. Based in the Mission, so I’m told:

Now THAT’S a rad stretch limo

Parked just down the street from the illustrious Verdi Club. Perhaps if Uber drivers drove these instead of those boring grandpa town cars, I might even be inclined to try them out for once!

Actually, NOPE.

Burrito everything

Yesterday we heard about a burrito vending machine and a year old article in Esquire proclaiming El Farolito’s burrito to be the most life changing in America* made the rounds, sparking some inevitable backlash. Today the ol’ HuffPo brings us a video of an amazing burrito cake made by a bakery in Portland** for a wedding.

Watching this makes me hungry and grossed out at the same time. My brain and stomach can’t reconcile what I’m seeing.***

*I would say the super quesadilla suiza is more likely to be life changing. Also, I’m not actually sure how either food changes anyone’s life.

** Artisan Baking Company, name wouldn’t fly in SF because EVERYTHING IS ALREADY ARTISAN.

*** Doesn’t that burrito cake look angry? Like it’s gonna angrily eat you?

Go Ninres!

I’m kind of disappointed that LA beat SF in the race for the first burrito-dispensing kiosk

LAist has all the details:

Burritobox has launched “the world’s first burrito kiosk,” as they claim on their website. The first box, which looks pretty much like an orange-colored RedBox kiosk, is sitting at the door front of the 24-hour Mobile gas station at 8380 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood and has been there for a couple of weeks. A second one will be hitting a Century City 76 station come Jan. 18.

Maybe the burritos aren’t nearly as bad as the frozen ones you can find at a 7-Eleven. The company boasts that the ingredients in their 100 percent natural burritos have no hormones or antibiotics, and their breakfast burritos have cage-free eggs. Say what?!

On top of that, the $3 (plus tax) burritos are customizable. The burrito varieties you can choose from include roasted potato with egg and cheese, uncured bacon with egg and cheese, chorizo sausage with egg and cheese, free-range chicken with beans and rice, and shredded beef and cheese, according to the Los Angeles Times.

You can also add sides such as sour cream, Tabasco, and guacamole to your order on the touch screen for an extra fee. After you complete your order, the vending machine plays a music video or ad to entertain you while you wait and then dispenses your burrito within a minute.

Would you try it?

Bars on Mission Street at the turn of last century harbored even more mustaches than bars of today

As Patti Dillion explains to the Bernal Heights History Project:

This is a photo of the interior of Dolan’s Bar which was at 3311 Mission St from about 1897 to 1919.  The Dolan Bros were:

  • William T
  • John E – her great grandfather and member of the SFPD
  • Michael H – also of the SFPD
  • Lawrence J – plumber by trade and elected to the CA State Assembly & Sheriff of San Francisco, appointed Sealer of Weights and Measures (second from the left in the photo)

Says Patti: “I’m wondering if someone has a photo of the exterior of the building from about the same time. I would love to see what it looked like back then.”

Can anyone help her out?

I think they were probably dancing to something like…
