Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Los Angeles Is Fun

Every now and then, the now-LA-based but still SF-devoted photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 shots and we call it “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this edition:

Los Angeles is fun. There are photo stores in this town that can’t believe anyone still shoots film so I can buy the lot of it for hella cheap. Everyone here is trying to be professional and “make it”. I’m waking up sometimes at 6 AM just to walk the streets, see what I can find. My style lately has been influenced by Bill Cunningham, the Los Angeles Public Library and a book I saw in SF’s Japantown, Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Winter Heatwave

Every now and then, the now-LA-based but still SF-devoted photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 shots and we call it “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this edition:

This roll is an example of the various types of shoots I’ve been on in the past month. The first photo is Ashley Pamela on her birthday off Melrose. Ashley Ording on a concept shoot at the Legion of Honor. Allyson Hillerby is a model / vintage lover I just met, she runs an online store / appointment only shop in the Mission. My pals near St. Francis Fountain on a recent trip to SF. Back in LA, I saw Michelle Guintu’s new art show off Santa Monica Blvd., at various times with various people wandered around Hollywood during our Winter Heatwave and worked with the twin brother punk band The Garden.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Since Moving to L.A.

For a long time, photographer Joshua Cobos shot a roll of film just for us, every week. He picked the best 13 photos and we posted them here, and it was called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Well, Joshua moved to Los Angeles a couple months back, but we figured that’s no reason for us to stop enjoying these peeks into his process — and L.A. is great! Here’s what Joshua has to say about this installment:

Since moving to L.A. I’ve been extremely busy assisting photographers, dodging celebrities and figuring out what’s going on with the music scene down here. It’s nice to be able to shoot a roll now and then for myself. With Bad Blood in mind, I chose a completely manual rangefinder (thanks Tanya) so I could meter the shots myself & one of the last rolls of AGFA Vista 100 I have. This week’s selections are a journal from the time Ashley & I moved here in August to two weeks ago when all the Christmas Tree lighting started. As always, I miss the bay.

Prints by Joshua Cobos

Our boy Joshua Cobos, of the popular Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos series, wants you to have some physical copies of his work:

I moved to Los Angeles about three months ago and have slowly been setting up my studio off Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. Upon unpacking, I found the collection of prints I had made while living in San Francisco. While I love and cherish the memories formed through collaboration and exploring, I have decided to not print these works in any other form. Instead, I would like to share these photos with my friends and compatriots of Photography. I hope they find a good home.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Gothic Literature, Jackie Sugarlumps and Hitchcock Films

Every week (except when he’s on an extended break), photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

I’m back from an extended break, i’m finishing up my last couple of weeks in san francisco with medium format cameras. I’ve reserved my 35mm exposures for a different project altogether. I wasn’t sure what the exposures would contain when I loaded the rolls but my inspirations of late have been an oxford compilation of gothic literature I found at Adobe, Jackie Sugarlumps (whom is always looking for escape to warm water), and hitchcock films, especially Vertigo.

Thanks, Joshua! (Btw Joshua is relocating to LA for a spell, and we’ve asked him to keep doing “Bad Blood” while he’s down thataway, so pray he does it because it’ll be a great way to visit SoCal without actually having to visit SoCal!) Ten more shots after the jump (plus a handy guide to previous “Bad Blood” installments):

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Last Nite

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

Jamie’s got a new dance night at Elbo Room, also my favorite place to play pinball. I’m sure he could explain his DJ night a lot better but it’s music from the early 2000s. Back then I was shooting on a Canon Rebel 2000 and using Tri-X for black and white, AGFA Vista 200 for color. My teacher back then was a true film snob in the best sense, dismissing those stocks as pedestrian and value brands. When I can, I shoot a brand I think she’d appreciate, Fuji Pro 400H, which is what I’ve used here for Last Nite.

Thanks, Joshua! Looks like a killer party, Jamie! (Keep tabs on future editions here.) Ten more shots after the jump:

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: The Unpredictable Nature of the Chemistry

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

I shot this roll of AGFA film knowing that it had expired in 1997, I thought overexposure would help retain some of qualities that AGFA shooters love. Wild colors, surreal textures and dreamy skies. The drawback is that the film has degraded severely and there was no real way to verify how the film was stored from production time to my purchase. I really don’t mind though, part of the reason why I shoot film like this is the unpredictable nature of the chemistry.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Easter

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

My Yashica D kicked the bucket a couple weeks back. A good TLR is hard to find on the cheap, repairs almost never come back with a 100% working camera either. Luckily a friend of mine acquired some new cameras so I was able to finish this series with her old Yashica A. Sally’s Easter party, an old friend came up to visit from the OC, some behind the scenes looks at projects I’ve worked on & a trip to Lake Merritt with Rachel Duffy.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Sci-Fi Series

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

I’ve been working on this sci-fi series for a couple rolls now but this is a more concentrated effort to visualize my idea. I used very little by means of equipment for this series, relying more on natural light, timing & collaboration with the subject’s environment. Requiring the subjects to bring in aspects of their own reality allowed the characters to build a foundation of verisimilitude, purposely obscured for anonymity.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: The Way I Shoot

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

The way i shoot involves maybe setting up two or three shoots a month, concepts that i work on over long periods of time. Since each roll takes about a week to shoot, a lot of my personal life ends up on these rolls. Bad blood has turned my perspective into my journal. This is Velvia 50 transparency film shot on my 35mm Canonet rangefinder.
