Life Tip: Eat more pie (from Chile Pies)

Each week on Roll Over Easy we share life tips, which are simple tips that we think the humans of San Francisco can use to improve their lives a bit, and we’re more than happy to repeat some of these tips here.

Two statements you never hear are, “I just eat pie all the time” and “I was eating this pie the other day and I was so angry”. So this week’s tip is simple: Do yourself a favor and eat a slice of pie. While Mission Pie is obviously the local favorite, I’m confident in saying that the best pie around is the Lemon Butter pie from Chile Pies. Behold, a very delicious pie:

Fire at 20th and San Carlos!

I’m sure you can hear the sirens. (Photo by Mike Chino.)

Looks like it was started by some roofers. They saved a puppy from

Cute!

Throwback Thursday: Dennis Richmond rules!

Way back in ’08, when beloved longtime local news anchor Dennis Richmond was set to retire, everybody went nuts. We did a post about some portraits people had done to honor him, which led to our discovery of this gem on Flickr:

Such a great Dennis Richmond portrait — and itself just a killer photo, right!?

AND THEN, GET THIS, years later, I was partying at Thee Parkside and had a CHANCE ENCOUNTER with the two sisters in the photo! I couldn’t believe it! I told them what a big fan I was, we did some Jäger shots — and then we recreated the photo, with me as Dennis Richmond:

(I never posted about this development before, but I found this pic the other day while putting together my album of Mission Hill Saloon/Unresolved Love Life of Evelyn Lee memories.)

Dennis Richmond rules!

CONTEST: Win tickets to Fucked Up at the Independent!

That’s a picture of Fucked Up in Austin in 2010. Next Tuesday, they’re playing in San Francisco, and we’d like to give you some free tickets. Here’s their label’s blurb about the new album, released in June:

Musically, Glass Boys carries echoes of some of the more ragged and adventurous bands from America’s punk past (Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr.), but it also has some of the anthemic charge of the Who and the guttural intensity of Negative Approach. Singer Damian Abraham still growls like a demon, but he’s found more range and depth in his bark. Drummer Jonah Falco does something innovative on the LP, playing four simultaneous drums tracks, two of them in half speed, which  gives a subtly psychedelic, disorienting feel. (A limited vinyl edition of the album includes a bonus version that only features Falco’s half-time drums.) The triple-guitar battalion of Mike Haliechuk, Ben Cook, and Josh Zucker still builds symphonies out of feedback and power-chords, but this time around, there’s less emphasis on world-crushing riffs and more on world-creating textures. Bassist Sandy Miranda is now even more a part of that storm, her instrument blurring in with that overwhelming guitar roar.

Sounds excellent! To win tickets, use the phrase “fucked up” in some kind of creative or interesting way in the comments section below. A winner will be decided based on merit. Contest ends Monday at 5pm.

Or to just buy tickets, go here.

Now let’s rock:

Great debate

El Patio is no more, but there will be Frito pie!

There was a brief period about 9 years ago when El Patio was my favorite restaurant in the Mission. It was a little off the beaten path, it was near the Knockout, the food was good, there was never a wait, and the cutesy decor almost sort of felt like Disneyland or the Secret Alley.

I guess it closed recently, and it’s gonna be replaced by the Barchili/Old Bus Tavern combo that’s been popping up at Pizzahacker on Tuesdays. I had their burger and their Frito pie and a couple of their beers a couple weeks ago, and it was all awesome, so we’re gaining something good. But I’ll always remember El Patio fondly.

Here’s a cheesy blurb I wrote about it while working as an intern for an online travel guide company in 2006:

On the outskirts of the Mission District, where Valencia dead-ends into Mission Street, lies a hidden gem. While the Taqueria Cancun outpost across the way has garnered more accolades, El Patio is an exceedingly pleasant place for a home-cooked meal. Unlike its burrito-centric neighbors, this establishment offers full sit-down service, and heaping plates of Salvadoran and Mexican specialties. Sun streams in through the windows and skylights, providing ample reason to sit around drinking imported beer (such as Suprema or Regia), enjoying the sights and sounds of the bustling intersection out front and perhaps chowing down on a few plates of pupusas or a hot lengua entree. My boss was saying the clients at Marriott were asking for some more off-the-beaten-path stuff for their San Francisco city guide. I was like, “I’ve got just the thing!”

More or less trippy than a double-decker freeway cutting through Hayes Valley in the early ’90s?

UPDATE: Oh yeah, Bernalwood did a then-and-now post with this pic a few years back.

Tonight at Adobe: Mujeres Sin Compromiso

We’ve been having those warm Mission nights all week (you know, the ones where you somehow find yourself walking around in shorts and a t-shirt at midnight), and what better way to take advantage of the excitement in the air than with a party at Adobe featuring a bunch of rad local women photographers:

A collection of Bay Area women photographers without boundaries. Exploring photography’s particular ability to describe and convey emotions. Whether referencing an immediately identifiable emotion or one that is conceptual and abstract, each photograph encourages the viewer to contemplate the emotional context in which the photo was taken.

Check out this jar of homemade Wes Burger ketchup

Man, I love homemade ketchup. Here, Wes explains tonight’s burger:

This is one of those rare times when I am going to put ketchup on a burger. Homemade scallion ketchup with shredded lettuce, cheddar pickles and lays potato chips. Side is jalapeno queso tots. See y’all 6-10 at Mojo Bicycle Cafe
