The Gooch Palms, all the way from Australia, live onstage in SF tonight

The Gooch Palms are definitely my favorite new band of late, and even though they’re from Australia, they’re playing tonight right here in San Francisco:

It might be Sunday, but THAT DOESN’T MATTER cause it’s also Labor Day eve!!! So come celebrate having Monday off with killer cuties POOKIE & THE POODLEZ, Aussie punk sweethearts THE GOOCH PALMS and doo-wop punker ELVIS CHRIST!

Remembering Diary, and Diary after-parties

Our pal Lizzy (screaming over there on the far right), who relocated to Detroit a couple years back, but during her 6 years in SF, she had a lot of fun times at legendary Pop’s emo night “Diary” (RIP). She did a little #tbt remembrance today:

I’ve been to a lot of parties which ended because they were broken up, in college mostly. For whatever reason, it’s always going to be a little bit significant to me that the only San Francsico party I was ever at which was broken up by police was a Diary after party.

Unless someone told me something way wrong there was a noise complaint because everyone was singing Understanding in a Car Crash too loud.

Read on for a little more.

(And for a *lot* more, check out my lengthy emo-related interviews with Lizzy and Diary founder Patric Fallon from a few years back.)

Crazy koozie color wheel

Epic! Even better than that last one!

Thursday morning music moment: Luke Sweeney takes you on a magic carpet ride

These are without a doubt some of the greatest special effects I have ever seen:

Delightful.  Oh, and they’re also playing at the Brick & Mortar this Saturday!

Kids make the darnedest gifts for their parents

The legendary Cody Frost explains:

Left: a normal stapler. Right: a ‘pillow’ a coworker’s son made for him because his father “looked tired”. #laughedsohard #kidsareourfuture #kidsareamazing #kidsareinsane

Awwww.

Thrillhouse Records, an accurate approximation of SF in the early ’90s

The fine folks at Bernalwood today shine a spotlight on a local business which has managed to cultivate a vibe that is not ’10s SF or ’00s SF or even late- or mid-’90s SF — but early-’90s SF:

Want to know what counterculture looked like in the analog days before Tim Berners-Lee unleashed his Prometheus on our unsuspecting planet? What were the sensibilities of a young and alienated generation in an age of ascendant Reaganism, cassette tapes, and desktop publishing euphoria? What were the totems and signifiers of this edgy, halcyon time?

What did it look like?  What did it smell like??

Wonder no more: It looked and smelled exactly like Thrillhouse Records.

Read on for more info and photos.

(For me it’s also a time capsule of mid-to-late ’00s nostalgia.)

Here’s an opportunity to join the Secret Alley family

It’s a legendary place. You know you wanna.

Here’s the deal, according to Craigslist:

We are three women looking for a new officemate to share our unique space inside an incredibly unique arts collective space located in the Mission District. You are a full- or part-time creative freelancer type person who isn’t always on the hustle for how to make 500 dollars fast and has time for us, but we’re also open minded.

The shared space is an open 25″ x 10″ room with two white walls, one bright sea green wall, and one black wall. We have built three desks into the space using redwood and welded rebar. We also created a small chill space with two chairs, a coffee table, a record player, and a bar set-up. We’d love your creative input and help in finishing the design of the space, if that’s something that interests you.

[...]

We are not directly inside the arts space but rather right next door to it. We are considered part of the community and have access to the shared space inside, including a magical events space and kitchen/bar area. Other tenants include filmmakers and a community radio station. On the first floor is a gallery space that is currently being built out. Our space is on the second floor and there is a working elevator.
