The Business turns 2 tonight!

Did you know that stand-up comedy, as we know it, started in San Francisco? It’s true! According to Joe Rogan on Episode 161 of the WTF podcast, anyway. He credits it to when Mark Twain first started giving hilarious speeches filled with wit and biting social commentary around town. Without Mark Twain, no Gallagher. Think about that.

Anyways, the other day I passed by Mission comedian Chris Garcia in the street, jumped in front of him, and blurted out, “CHRIS GARCIA!”. After this, I had no follow up other than a crazy wild-eyed stare. He looked at me a bit terrified. I followed up with, “Umm, yeah, sorry. I’m Vic from Mission Mission.”  He was like, “Oh hey! You should come to the Business this week. It’s our 2-year birthday.”

The Business is a weekly comedy showcase at the Dark Room featuring Chris, Sean Keane, Alex Koll, and Bucky Sinister. They also feature out-of-town comedians passing through. Why not take part in the rich history of San Francisco comedy and check them out tonight? The show starts at 8pm. Here is the event page.

Also, Chris Garcia (as Dr. 4:20) wishes you a happy day:

The Mission, now on VHS

Our buddy Kati J. spotted this on the ground somewhere in the vicinity of Mission Cliffs the other day — and for some reason DIDN’T PICK IT UP. For shame, Kati.

I hope somebody snagged it, and will soon bless us with some dope screencaps.

UPDATE: Kati J. defends herself:

Well, I thought it might be more beneficial to a tourist.

How thoughtful! You’re the best, Kati!

Watch the first commercial for Broke-Ass Stuart’s forthcoming IFC show!

Congrats, again, Stu!

Yet another pretty Mission video

Filmmaker Justin Gallagher’s 2011 Demo Reel features some pretty shots of the Mission, tilt-shifting, epic scoring, and some nice shots of TCB Couriers on bikes that may or may not be “fixies”. Hire him, already.

Saturn Rising at The Roxie

Local filmmaker Garry Bowden‘s new short film “Saturn Rising” premieres tonight at The Roxie. Along with the short there will be poetry readings, an art show and a live performance by Wild Child, whose music is in the movie.

Show starts at 7:30pm, $10 tickets.

Check out the trailer:

‘The Hipster Guide to San Francisco’

Didn’t get your fill of hackneyed hipster humor this week? You poor thing! Well check this baby out. In this video, a couple of young vacationers want to know what this whole San Francisco “hipster” thing is about, consult the ultimate hipster guide (Lonely Planet travel books, of course), then hit up such hipster hot-spots as Blazing Saddles bicycle rentery, Ritual Coffee Roasters, Aquarius Records, and Dolores Park. This stuff writes itself!

Of course, the first things I thought when I saw this were,”uhhh, that is not a single speed bike,” and, “aren’t those shots of Mars Vintage and Rasputin in Berkeley?” I guess that makes me a you-know-what-ster.

Korean pop music video filming in the Mission

Wow! Top K-Pop band K.R.A.Z.Y recently chose Clarion Alley to film their latest video. Watch these heartthrobs show their synchronized stuff:

Disclaimer: may not be a real K-pop band. Might just be some bored teens that weren’t good at skateboarding or basketball.

Innovations in bicycle doggy transport

It’s as if Timbuk2 read our dog-smuggling post from earlier this week and saw the need to fast-track this prototype out the door. Announced today, the Muttmover is the latest in bicycle dog transportation. Watch in this video as a young lady stuffs a pooch into the bag and effortlessly rides from Hayes Valley into the Mission. Nice work on that Market St. triple-lane change!

According the description, the bag is meant for animals under 15 pounds, including felines. Although, good luck getting a cat to put up with this nonsense.

Tribute to Liz Taylor

In this outtake from a wedding video I shot a few years back, the groom and his mother have an energetic back-and-forth regarding celebrity wedding counts. Hopefully that’s all you need to know:

MM at SXSW: Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers rock Barbarella

Shilpa Ray — she’s an Indian girl with soul-sister pipes, and she fronts basically a punk band in which she sings and plays some kind of janky old harmonium. It’s a killer mixture.

This video I took is not meant to be a primo concert film, but the sound is pretty good, and maybe it’ll give you a feel for what it’s like seeing Shilpa and Her Happy Hookers play at this club called Barbarella on a Friday afternoon at SXSW:

And lucky for us, she’s playing next Thursday at Bottom of the Hill!
