SF Mime Troupe In Dolores Park Tomorrow

The San Francisco Mime Troupe is performing for FREE in Dolores Park tomorrow, Monday 9/6. The show starts at 1:30pm.

They are called the “Mime Troupe” but don’t expect to see skinny dudes in whiteface pulling imaginary ropes. Do expect to see a hilarious musical theater production with a typical pinko SF spin on a current political theme.

This year’s production is called: “Posibilidad, Or Death of the Worker”. Here’s the trailer:

Nerd Girls

Hey, nerd girls, lay off the GPOYWs for a minute and look at this: The producers of The Dog Whisperer are currently casting a new show called Nerd Girls, and you should probably try to get in on the action. Eye on Blogs will tell you how to get involved right here.

Best of luck, nerd girls!

Theater That Isn't Polished and Perfect: 20 Years of the Marsh

Our pal Emily Wilson is pumped about this weekend:

Twenty years ago Stephanie Weisman started a place for solo performance, The Marsh. From the Hotel Utah, it moved to Morty’s in North Beach, and then to Valencia Street, where it’s been ever since.

To celebrate the anniversary, the Marsh is having a marathon Saturday, June 19 from noon to midnight, featuring about 40 past and present performers, including heavy hitters such as Dan Hoyle, Charlie Varon and Marga Gomez.

After the jump, Emily talks to Weisman and others about the theater’s legacy and the nature of solo performance . . .

Witches vs Bitches – Mission vs Marina Theatre

The Mission’s unofficial entertainment critic, 40 Going on 28′s TK, brings us this most excellent review of Wicked, now playing at the Orpheum:

More interesting to me is the fact that “Wicked” is clearly a Mission vs. Marina allegory. Now, if you’re not familiar, the plot essentially concerns the backstory of the witches in “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” On the one hand, we have Elphaba, our Mission girl, who will grow up (to be labeled by the patriarchy) as the Wicked Witch of the West. She has body art (i.e., she’s green) and doesn’t get along with her parents. At school, she develops an interest in animal rights and doesn’t hang out much with the cool crowd. This should remind you of someone you know by this point.

I will now magically turn Tecate tallboys into Midori sours!!

Glinda is pretty much the prototypical Marina girl. She’s blonde and rich and not that smart. She makes fun of Elphaba and doesn’t think anything of her right up until the time she suddenly discovers that the stuff Elphaba likes (in the musical, magic; in the real world, LCD Soundsystem and ecstasy) is actually really cool.

Read more mindblowing interpretation at 40 Going on 28.

Reality Check: There are thousands of Latinos that are deported everyday and all the SF bloggers don't lose their collective shit about it

Screen shot 2009-10-30 at 3.34.05 PM

Look, our immigration laws are complete bullshit, but the reality of Murat’s (the The Amuse-Bouche Guy) situation is just absurd.  This guy is married to a U.S. citizen, could have easily stayed here legally, but instead just let his visa expire while he chilled out selling muffins.  His plight is a fucking insult to everyone that has to fight to be here illegally, who have to endure watching their loved ones get deported back countries with oppressive regimes in power while they work for slave wages because of their government-mandated undocumented status, all the while having absolutely no chance to be here legally.

Murat had the golden ticket and opted to not cash it in.  Let’s have a conversation about the people with real problems.

Jason Alexander Visits The Marsh

Jason Alexander FTW

In a star-studded weekend for Valencia St., Jason Alexander decided to attend Rick Reynolds’ Only the Truth is Funny at The Marsh.  It looks like he might have even said some words on stage.

Damn it.
