How Berlin-style ping pong took San Francisco by storm

The Bold Italic this morning takes a look at the history of Berlin-style ping pong in San Francisco. Here’s a taste:

One of the great things about Berlin-style ping-pong is how social it is. You find yourself next to strangers in the circle, and you have this common sports drama to bond over. Somebody makes a wild shot, and you’re all cheering and exchanging critiques together. You recognize players of similar skill levels to your own, and you root for them. Pretty soon you’re friends.

That’s how it’s been at American Tripps. It’s a real scene.

Read on for the full story.

And don’t forget, American Tripps returns to the Secret Alley TONIGHT!! Start your Halloween weekend off right!

Berlin-style ping pong party returns this Friday, and for Halloween it’s masquerading as a soul night!

American Tripps is back after a monthlong hiatus, and there are two big reasons you DO NOT want to miss this edition:

  1. To kick off Halloween weekend right, the party is eschewing techno for one night only to masquerade as a SOUL NIGHT, featuring DJ Wam Bam Ashleyanne (who you might remember TOTALLY ROCKED last Friday’s Oldies Night at the Knockout).
  2. This event is your first opportunity to set foot inside The NEW AND IMPROVED Secret Alley. The crew spent all of October on a rad remodel. Nobody knows quite what to expect, but if you’ve been inside before, you know it can only get more impressive.

Plus, I hear Kreayshawn and Dolly Parton are both gonna be there. RSVP and invite your friends!

ALSO, the Friday after that (November 4th) is yet another very special American Tripps event, The American Tripps Berlin-Style Ping Pong Block Party. More details soon.

And he was really going for it, blasting right the hell up into Bernal Heights.

At least he’s wearing a helmet.

Going bonkers for volleybonk

The Bold Italic today takes a look at everybody’s favorite Tallahassee import, volleybonk:

Volleybonk is a combination of volleyball, tennis, kickball, and, well, Fight Club.

We rotate service games similar to volleyball, except there’s no maximum or minimum number of players (they’ve had as few as two and as many as 36).

The goal, like tennis, is to hit winners or force errors, except unlike tennis, our team can volley among ourselves as many times as we want after the first bounce in order to get the ball across, as long as the same person doesn’t hit it twice in a row. We can strike the ball with any part of our bodies, so kicking, punching, heading, kneeing, or clotheslining are all on the table. Oh, and we don’t keep score.

That’s right, American Tripps is tonight! Our post from earlier this week itemizes some of the reasons to be excited:

We’re all really excited about how Berlin-style ping pong is taking the neighborhood by storm, and we’re really excited to have the entire Haçeteria crew on the decks this week, and we’re excited that this will be the final American Tripps before The Secret Alley undergoes a few interesting changes in October, and we’re excited that our official photographer this week will be none other than The Tenderloin Geographic Society herself!

Read on for the super rad official poster (featuring Paddlemonster and some of his pals) and a hott pic of a couple of hotties making out.

And don’t forget to RSVP and invite your friends.
