SoCha? Nuh-uh!

Local blogs are aflutter with this South of Chavez / SoCha thing and how it makes us all sick to our stomachs. Doye, we blew chunks about this ages ago. Instead of complaining, why not come up with something better?

Burrito Justice has already proposed La Lengua because hey, it looks like a big-ass tongue. This has been a solid choice since its inception in November, but I think brainslip is on to something with these suggestions:

ValEndcia – End of Valencia.

TriCirRoc – El Triangulo Circa Roccapulco.

NoJo (“noho”) – Area in the vicinity of gap found on San Jose Ave between 27th St and 26th St (owned by the Salvation Army) where no pedestrian or vehicular passage is permitted.

See the other 7 proposals here.

Free Kink.com Armory Tour This Friday

If you’re like me, you love Moorish architecture and you’re really interested in the historical significance of the Armory. Imagine finally being able to  see inside the same walls that housed the weapons of the U.S. National Guard from 1912-1914! I wonder there’s still evidence of it’s role as a rallying point for the 1934 San Francisco General Strike (an event known as “Bloody Thursday”).

Well Friday is our lucky day because according to flavorpill, there’s a free tour of the Armory! It starts at 4:30pm and it’s an hour long.

(They film people fucking in there too)

Update: Ok, brownpapertickets says it’s sold out. But then again, it’s said that for as long as I can remember and I’ve tried to get the tour several times in the past year. Anyone get a ticket? In the meantime, I’m checking with them to make sure. Stay tuned.

Update 2: NO ARMORY TOUR FOR YOU:

Ever since being written up in the Bay Guardian as the best free tour of an adult entertainment company, we have been inundated wiuth tour requests. We are in fact sold out till Sept of this year. Thank you for your interest.

Burrito Map

I stumbled upon this custom radial map of some guy’s favorite burrito joints and their relative distances from his home. From the looks of it, it’s a map of Santa Clara:

Her son Greg, then 29, had recently introduced her to the “My Maps” plotting feature on Google maps. “He suggested that it would [even] allow me to map his favorite burrito joints, and I took him at his word,” says Brown. “I had radial maps in my head; they seem the most primal, symbolic kind of map. And yet–here’s the beauty and elasticity of maps–perfect for burrito joints!” Wondering about those Korean characters at the bottom? They’re a nod to Greg’s wife, who is Korean. The translation: “I love burritos.”

This looks like something we’d see on Burrito Justice; I’m surprised Johnny0 wasn’t consulted. Although in the Mission we’d definitely have to use feet instead of miles.

Bombay Ice Creamery Establishes Self As Known Community Adulturer

Well would you look at that. For as long as I can remember, it’s been “Bomb y Ice Creamery“. I guess they they got sick of Spanish-speaking folks asking for explosive ordnance with a side of ice cream.

Anyone get pictures of it being installed?

Terrifying Rope Swing

Many Machines identifies this find by local blogger S. Pigeon as a rope swing atop Billy Goat Hill in the outer reaches of Da Noe. (Or is it Lower DH?)

Anyway, who wants to run up there and risk grim death with me? Link.

Missionary? Not In The Mission

I keep noticing this bit of sidewalk stenciling in front of a house on Valencia between 20th and 21st.

It’s not in S. Pigeon’s “Codes Of The City” guide, so I can only assume that this is the meeting place of an underground club where swingers try out all the latest non-standard sex positions. You heard it here first. Knock on their door and ask for an application if you’re interested. (Don’t really do that)

Robby from OMG the Mish is trying to choose a dentist. Help him out.

(In all seriousness, I recommend Kathy Noordeh.)

Google Maps Time Travel On 18th and Treat

Yesterday Andrew posted about this cafe space up for grabs on 18th and Treat. Here is the spot on Google Maps:

But check this out: if you click the right arrow on 18th, Google Map’s built-in flux capacitor fires up and you get to see the same spot as it will appear in 2 months, if current economic trends continue!

Use this feature wisely and always remember: if you travel back in time, try not to fuck up your parent’s first date. Otherwise, they will never hook up and you will start to fade from existence. (But wait, then how did you get there in the first place? Damn, time travel is confusing. Discuss.)

If You Ever See A Vacancy Here, Move In

From our Introduce Yourself page, some neighborly advice from our neighbor Liz Dunn:

I first moved into the Mission in 1991 and lived on Elgin Park. Since then I’ve lived on 20th and Guerrero, Clinton Park, 22nd and Dolores, and that awesome brick building on 25th and Bartlett. If you ever see a vacancy there, you should move in–it’s an awesome mix of hipsters, ancient people who smell like pee, and couples in their 50s who still pay $450 a month.

Link. Plus, duh, it’s smack in the middle of one of the foremost Mission Sugar Rails.

I Wonder What Soul Night is Like in Here . . .

. . . at the ELBOW ROOM in Sparks, Nevada.  Better hurry before the Marina gets wind of this.
