Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Mouse Mask

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

Rocky told me about these mouse masks they had in the back of Foxy Lady on Mission St. Turns out the mask is an old Italian costume mask, pretty strange to find it in the dust of an old Erotic Boutique. I spent a week taking photographs of the mask in some situations I felt would contrast the intended purpose, my friends were thoroughly creeped out.

In the twenty questions of my life, these are the ‘animal vegetable mineral’ variants of the past week or so. A majority of these images were taken with an upcoming series of still lifes I’m doing in mind. Enjoy.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Summer Days and Nights in Glorious Black and White

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. (Although he’s been on hiatus for a lil bit.) He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

I’ve been working on my next gallery show, which might explain why there hasn’t been a Bad Blood in a couple of weeks. This roll was taken around the time of the Pride Festival & finished up sometime late last week. The Burnt Ones performance at El Rio was ridiculous, sweaty & beautiful, fuzz so solid that my ears are still ringing. Bethany & Jake got engaged, congrats to them. The woman across from me at St Francis is worth a mention as well, for the record.

This is a night in my life when i’m shooting Shine On at the Knockout. Cross Processed Slide film and my LC-A+ with a Colorsplash Flash. Probably my favorite music of all time, Creation Records, Jesus & Mary Chain and Cocteau Twins. Come say hello or something.

Thanks, Joshua! Shine On of course is the top indie pop dance party in town, and tonight’s edition features two live bands and the best indie pop DJs this side of 1992. RSVP and invite your frens!

The art of an incredibly trippy 3D-seeming animated GIF

Our pal Doc Pop, often a proponent of digital technology over analog, has been experimenting with film lately, and today he mashed digital and analog up by making a batch of killer GIFs from photos he took with some crazy old camera with four lenses.

Amongst all the crummy old loaner cameras in the Noisebridge dark room I found a Nishika N8000, a camera that shoots 4 side by side lenses that trigger simultaneously to capture multiple points of an object. These cameras shoot on common 35mm film, but the final process of printing on lenticular prints is a bit of a pain, so I decided to try my hand at animating each shot as a .gif.

Read on for the rest of the pics and a thorough explanation of his process.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Color Story

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s installment:

Color stories are used primarily to help fashion designers describe their themes. Each of these images can suggest something different to each viewer; location, time & the lack of apparent subject enhance one’s perception of color. Still, these color stories are unique to me & my travels.

How did you spend your sunny Sunday?

Bruno's or Brun's

Seeing The Avengers again in an air conditioned movie theater? Waiting in line for Bi Rite Creamery? Walking the length of the city borders? Jumping off of a rope swing into the Russian River?

It’s gonna be hot again today. Hopefully you’re not stuck sweating it out in a cubicle.
