Responsible Pet Ownership in the Mission

Happy Monday, readership! I forgot to post our weekly SPCA update on Friday, so I’ll do it now, and I’ll also preface it with a comment from the previous week’s post, from our buddy Cranky Old Mission Guy:

I’m a big fan of these SFSPCA posts that Houghie has been doing every Friday, and it’s because I adopted an animal from our local pound on 16th St., and it was way easier than I thought it would be, and even more rewarding than I ever imagined.

I knew that my building was supposed to be “no pets”, but I had been living there for a few years, so I had a talk with the building manager about making an exception. I emphasized the point that it wouldn’t be some huge, noisy beast, and he knew that I don’t spend 18 out of 24 hours in a day elsewhere. In the end, he not only allowed the pet, but allowed several more for other tenants. A victory for responsible animal companionship.

Aside from that, I also have to say that my adopted pet, who had some trust issues, has been a total joy and an almost constant furry companion — even on vacations. My life and hers have both been improved.

So that’s what I have to say about it; if you don’t want to do it, that’s fine. But if you think you might want to, and you’re not sure you’ll be allowed, give it some more thought. It might work out.

Think it over! And then give these guys a gander:

Jackpot

Jackpot hit it big when he caught a ride to SF from Madera and now he is looking to really it the jackpot by finding a new, forever home. He is big, but gentle, and walks well on leash. When excited he will do cute play bows to try to engage you in playing with him. He has also tried really hard to wait until someone can take him outside to take care of his business, so housetraining in a home with a regular schedule should be a snap.

Hot Cookie

Hot Cookie is an energetic little guy. He has a really macho stature- there is something about him that is reminiscent of a beefy wrestler. Hot Cookie loves meeting new people, sitting on laps, playing fetch and treats, all of which will make him highly trainable. He is still in the energetic puppy phase at 1yr 7mos so we recommend that Hot Cookie and his new guardians attend some of the excellent training classes here at the SFSPCA.

Life at a Higher Speed

Happy Friday, friends! These cute animals need a home btw!

Fastlane — 1 year old female calico

Appropriately named, Fastlane is a quick moving and sleek little girl. She enjoys life at a higher speed than most and prefers to keep the road free of other cats. Fastlane is equally gentle and loving to round off her highway ride to your heart.

Pharaoh — 7 year old Austrailian Shepherd

Oh yeah… You’ve seen my type before…the breed that wins all the ribbons at dog athletic competitions and beauty competitions too. I’m a well mannered and handsome guy, easy on the leash, and tender-hearted. My breed is known for being super trainable and very smart!

Outdoorsy Guy, Full-Figured Gal

Happy Friday, all y’all! Please do consider adopting one of these animals!

Finn — 10-month-old male Yellow Lab

I think they named me Finn cause I like to swim? Wait, but I also like to hike…and walk…and run….and chase those things you call tennis balls. Point is, I like to a lot of things, and the more outdoorsy and social it is, the more I love it!

It’s summertime out there, and that means you’re spending time at the park, at the sidewalk café, and just enjoying all the things the Bay Area has to offer – I would love to share those with you!

Loretta — 5-year-old tabby

This full figured gal is as sweet as they come. Loretta can be a bit shy at first but give her some time and she’ll be ready to climb into your lap! Loretta is generally low-key so quieter homes would probably make her happiest. If you’re looking for a relaxed, sun-bathing type of cat that wants to lounge next to you while you read a book then visit Loretta! Seriously, how can you resist that face?? And remember – July means name your adoption fee for us adult cats! I mean, I’m worth a zillion bucks, but we can make arrangements

One-Eyed Kitty, Luxury-Sized Doberman

Happy Friday, you guys! Quit looting department stores now and adopt a pet please!

Jack — 7 year old male

Jack is just your typical one-eyed friendly kitty! He is Mr. Personality and will win you over in no time at all! Want a best friend? Jack’s your cat. This fella has lived with other cats before, and might not mind a new brother or sister at all! Arrrrr matey! And don’t forget! Our Cat-A-Palooza specials continue through July…name your OWN adoption fee for all cats over 6 months of age! For reals!

Lakota– 10 month old male Doberman

Are you ready for a luxury-sized dog? Meet Lakota. He’s big (and likely to get even bigger), strong, friendly and playful. He’s still just an overgrown puppy and has a lot to learn. He’s looking for an active adopter that can keep up with his high energy level, and who will take him to a rewards-based training class right away.

Shortstop and Sassy

Happy Friday, my fellow Americans! What better way to celebrate our nation’s independence than by adopting one of the below cutie pies!?

Shortstop — 2 year old terrier mix

This guy! Such a cute and adorable little guy….can’t you just picture yourself strolling the streets of San Francisco, stopping for a burrito, and enjoying Dolores Park together? Shortstop is a bright and active dog, hoping to find a home with adopters who’ll be able provide him with plenty of opportunities for both mental and physical exercise on a daily basis. Attending training classes will be a great way for him to learn the skills needed to become a well mannered companion.

Sassy (aka Ms. America) — 9 year old female shorthair

Sassy wants you! To adopt her! What a delightful kitty Sassy is! She is friendly, outgoing, and playful and enjoys petting, affection and lap time. She may even roll over and let you pet her belly! She’s a darling lady, eager to nuzzle your face and purr in your ear and be your one and only cat princess!

All pets adopted from SFSPCA have received a pre-adoption veterinary exam and behavior assessment, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery and a microchip.
