Valencia St Victory

Neighboring Bernalwood alerts us to new Google Street View imagery!  Not only are Bernal and La Lengua out of the Google black hole, but the Mission has updated images.

This guy in front of Pi Bar was happy to see the Google Prius:

In fact, he held this pose for quite some time:

Most impressively, he managed to keep his feet in EXACTLY THE SAME POSITION as Google drove by, yet he continued to move down the sidewalk. That, my friends, is talent.

Copycat tree

I ran into these guys on San Jose between 23rd and 24th, filming local character Omer Travers talking about his favorite tree and playing some original songs. According to Omer, this tree — which he often sits in front of — mimics his dance moves in the wind and must be a “bonsai maple” because of its tiny leaves. What will become of this documentary project is yet to be determined, but stay tuned, and we may find out.

Jane ‘Sue Sylvester’ Lynch is at Mission Cliffs right now

Omer the pizza guy

True, most times he’ll just spout off leud or homophobic comments sung to the tune of Batman as you walk by.  And other times he’ll get so wasted on the sidewalk across the street from your house that he starts talking Tea Party nonsense, or he’ll climb inside Yoko-Ono’s window.  But sometimes, just sometimes, he offers you a pizza when you really need a pizza.

Didgeridoo or didgeridon’t?

Whoa! I saw this guy a couple weeks ago on BART. He didged all the way from West Oakland to 24th Street. No one seemed to really mind (including BART police), but he attracted some raised eyebrows…

Kelly from Indie Mart needs your help to beat cancer

If you have ever been to Indie Mart, read The Bold Italic, or experienced a class at Workshop, you probably know who Kelly Malone is, and found that she is a creative force to be reckoned with. Kelly has recently been diagnosed with an advanced stage cancer, and needs our help to pay for the expensive treatments that she needs. From the Workshop website:

Originally dropped from her previous insurance because of the cancer diagnosis, Kelly has had no chance of obtaining new health insurance due to this pre-existing condition. Through this all, Kelly keeps a smile on her face and continues to give back to San Francisco, often devoting much of her own income and sweat to continue businesses that enrich the city. As a successful small business owner, designer, artist, event planner, part of the Treasure Island Music Festival & Noise Pop, Kelly has been able to keep up with medical bills through the ongoing treatments, surgeries, and chemotherapy schedules. But this latest diagnosis requires a treatment path that will exceed her financial abilities, and most likely require her to take a hiatus from her businesses. So she is now asking San Francisco for a helping hand.

Over the next few months, several fundraisers and donation drives will help raise the funds to pay for surgeries, chemotherapy, hospital stays, medication and care. Though Kelly has taken on the task of superhero in past bouts with cancer, always working during her treatment schedules, this time she needs to take a few months off so that she can go heavier on her treatment and kick cancer for good. If you’ve been to an Indie Mart, if you have been to a class at Workshop, if you have been to a Kelly Malone event, or if you are simply a fan of Kelly’s mission, and willing to help out, we ask that you help out.

We adore Kelly, and have been chronicling her comings and goings for ages, and we wish her a quick and easy recovery. You can click here to donate, and any amount is greatly appreciated.

Luke Wilson just wants to have dinner at Beretta, not have his picture taken with you

Reader Ray F. had a fun celebrity sighting last night:

So I ran into Luke Wilson on the street yesterday at 7pm.

He was walking on Valencia between 22nd and 23rd, it looked like they may have been going to Beretta. I had actually stopped to take a photo of something when I noticed him walk up with a really beautiful woman. I asked him politely if I could take a photo with him and he got all bent out of shape. I felt terrible so I apologized and walked away, but it totally sucked.

Lame! Dave Chappelle was so much more fun.

Now let’s all watch some classic Luke:

UPDATE: Via our Facebook wall, DJ Jamie Jams confirms the sighting, adding that Wilson had some drinks at Elbo Room too.

“Robin Williams, Brian Wilson, and  Jem.”

Seriously, though. This guy was way cool. He didn’t seem phased that I ran out of Dalva yelling, “HI I SAW YOU FROM THE BAR AND CAN I TAKE YOUR PICTURE PLZ?”. He confirmed that he didn’t lose a bet and just did it for fun. You rule, dude.

Chicken feet headgear: hot in 2011?

So, just in case you were wondering: the gentleman decked out in festive attire made from chicken feet and tinfoil wandering last Sunday’s Noise Pop & Shop at Public Works wasn’t some derelict who wandered in from under the overpass completely crazy. That was none other than visionary artist Jason Jaworski, fresh from the scene of his latest performance. See? Art – the more you know!
