Mission Gonna Get Denser Maybe

Over at Curbed SF, Sarah Hromack analyzes the proposed Eastern Neighborhood Plan:

If ratified, 2,200 acres’ worth of the Central Waterfront, Bayview, Potrero Hill, the Mission, and some parts of SoMa will be entirely rezoned. Expect increased housing density, building heights, and new-and-improved building chateau gonflable codes— enough to support a projected 20,000 new residents by 2025.

Thursday Night Entertainment Pick: DJ Katie at Beauty Bar

Mission Mission’s very own Katie will be on the decks at Beauty Bar on Thursday from 7:30ish to 10ish. Katie tends to spin disco, soul, old r&b, and sometimes some ’60s garage rock and reggae. Last time, the dance floor got positively white hot! In attendance might be Mission Mission pals like Malcolm M., Lola and A Panda. Plus, a prize to the first person to guess Friend X‘s secret identity and point her out.

Dance and Drink for Emo! The Musical

Amanda Dolan, co-founder of Beards Beards Beards: A Theatre Company, alerts us to an event benefiting her organization’s debut show:

We’re producing our first show this summer (Emo! The Musical), and we’re throwing a fund raiser this weekend in….where else? The Mission. The party is being thrown at the San Francisco Mime Troupe (21st and Treat), cheap ($5!), and all the money goes towards our upcoming performance!

Belated Obligatory Olympic Torch Post

Yeah I was at AT&T Park when the torch was supposed to run by, and it was a bummer that it didn’t, but whatever. It was fun watching the chaos and playing frisbee on a cordoned-off street amid protesters and riot police. I took some video and put it together last night. It’s short and sweet, features a standout song from Back From The Grave Vol. 2, and a surprise ending.

Vertical Earthquake Could Hit the Mission District, Destroying View of Mural

Plug1 was talking about the “vertical earthquake” problem recently, and while it’s most apparent closer to downtown, the Mission gets its share of little tremors. The latest is a 50-foot luxury condo complex planned for the corner of 18th and Valencia. When the thing goes up, views of the above mural will be obstructed forever. Tomorrow is the final appeal. If you’d care to voice your opposition, aLittleDisplay’sBlog has all the deets. Link. (Via Curbed SF)

Once Again, the Mission District Suprises the Chronicle

On Sunday, the San Francisco Chronicle released their list of top 100 restaurants in the Bay Area, or as I like to call it “Top 100 Restaurants for People with Money”. This is what they had to say about Bar Bambino:

Owner Christopher Losa has created one of the coolest Italian restaurants in one of the most unlikely (read dicey) areas of the Mission District. It feels like New York’s East Village, but the nod to organic, sustainable and recycled products is very West Coast. [Link]

Is the Chronicle seriously that pretentious? Tartine Bakery is listed every year, but they never said it was in a bad neighborhood. And actually, they’ve never said that because it’s next to Delfina, which the Chronicle loves.

Maybe Stuff that White People Like should add the Chronicle Food Section to their list.

Ramblas Owner Acquires Cortez

Reaction to yesturday’s post regarding Zeitgeist turning into a Borders calls to mind the decades-old gentrification question in the Mission. One of my favorite places to take visiting family and friends who are not used to the grittiness of Valencia Street is Ramblas. The drinks and tapas and atmosphere here impart the attitude of the Mission (conversations, drunkenness, vitality) while the upscale nature of the restaurant provides respite from puke-stained streets and bathroom stink.

This morning, SFGate‘s The Inside Scoop reported that Ramblas owner Ron Silberstein (who also owns SoMa restaurant-brewery Thirsty Bear) acquired Cortez, a restaurant with a Michelin star (!!!). I can’t wait to see how it goes — hopefully some family will find their way into San Francisco sometime soon so I can have some organic Thirsty Bear ESB with my lamb cheek.

iViva Zeitgeist! (Boo, Borders)

We got a lot of heartwarming feedback regarding today’s post about the fate of Zeitgeist

1. Malcolm M. recommends a classic Leisure Town installment, “A Grand Day Out”, which may or may not take place in and around the vicinity of the bar in question:

2. Outraged Charles B. says:

We should go when Ali is here maybe… although it really calls for a big big group of people. Maybe Mills people and everyone I know in town will want to go out.
We should also burn the Borders to the ground one it’s done.

3. Curbed SF picked up the story. Sarah conjectures as to what might transpire:

Heads exploding, fists flying, inner children dying, Tom Ammiano on the ground, gasping for breath … Madness, just pure, delicious madness.

4. In seeking out art for this follow up, I myself came upon a wealth of good stuff on Flickr, including:

Also, we’ve gotten a bunch of hits via the SGSF Bay Area group on Suicide Girls, but we don’t know what they’re saying because none of us are members. Anyway, to one and all, thanks for reading.
