Public Service Announcement: Read Sylvia Plath

Last week, we were told to read Steinbeck, and I suggested The Moon Is Down, and then I started In Dubious Battle on reader Tim’s recommendation, and I’m loving it. This Mission Wheatpaste Book Club thing is working out just fine. (Check out Tim’s blog btw, it rules.)

Anyway, I don’t know anything about Sylvia Plath. What should we read?

Thanks, Nick!

What Happened With That Controversial Event Permit Proposal?

Mission Local reports that the proposal was shut down. The entire SF Mime Troupe showed up at the Board of Supervisors meeting apparently.

This Amendment Would Potentially Allow Any Event Permit to be Appealed by Any Member of the Public

This Amendment Would Potentially Allow Any Event Permit to Be Appealed by Any Member of the Public

In an email circulated this morning by Dana Ketchum of the SF Recreation & Parks Department, it is revealed that the Board of Supervisors will hear a proposal tomorrow that would allow ANY member of the public to appeal ANY event permit at ANY time.

This means that if one group was planning to screen, say, The Royal Tenenbaums one night in the park, another group could tie them up in appeals for weeks or months just because they think Wes Anderson sucks.

This reeks of improbability, like it could never possibly be approved, because the Parks Department itself would be forever tied up in appeals, like they’d have to hire an army of appeals processors to keep up with demand. Still, Ketchum’s email expresses urgency and concern, so maybe there’s a chance this thing actually goes through.

Bluesix Shut Down By The Man

SERIOUS BUMMER NEWS. One of my favorite underground acoustic music venues, Bluesix, is shutting down. The owner Joe Lewis is working with the inspector to finish out June concerts.

I had a lot of good times and amazing musical moments at Bluesix and I’m really sad to see it go. It was one of the few places where you could set up a show without jumping through a bunch of hoops with unresponsive promoters, lame restrictions, unfair door arrangements, and unappreciative clientele. The proximity to my favorite psychedelic taco joint didn’t hurt either.

Joe is looking to turn over the lease on 24th and Treat to someone in the community, so if you know someone a like-minded individual who is interested please drop him a line, otherwise it will probably become a lame bail-bond place.

Samovar Vs. Backwards-Rolling SUV

Fancy tea drinkers enjoying the wonderfully warm Sunday afternoon on the patio of Samovar Tea Lounge at 18th and Sanchez were unceremoniously jarred from their leisure by the rear end of a Mercedes SUV.  The driver apparently suffered a stroke while behind the wheel, causing her vehicle to roll backwards down the steep hill of Sanchez directly into the popular corner cafe.

One patron sitting outside was pinned against the wall and sustained a broken pelvis, but others sitting inside only suffered minor abrasions from the shattered glass flying everywhere.  Deigning this to be real news, ABC Local has a cute video about it with interviews from eyewitnesses like a Samovar server and the owner of Urban Bread who noticed the SUV rolling by and picked up the phone to call 911 as it crashed across the street.

Let’s hope everyone is OK and recovering (Samovar Tea Lounge included).

Mission Peak

Beth Spotswood over at Eye on Blogs points us toward Doug McCune’s series of maps of SF crime statistics visualized using elevation. There are maps for all kinds of different crimes, but the Mission is at the very least always pretty hilly. Read on.

Oh, that peak there? Prostitution, of course.
