Dolores Park overhaul could face delays because somebody doesn’t like the look of the new bathrooms

SFGate reports:

“The curves work,” said Commissioner Ron Miguel, referring to the shape of the fences above the building.

“But then you throw a box inside it, that doesn’t work,” he added, referring to the sharp edges of the building itself.

This might be a minor detail to some, but for project architects Susan Aitken and Aditya Advani, it means the entire project could be delayed.

Good gravy. Read on.

Exploring the possibility of having Sunday Streets a lot more often

Apparently the previously announced four-in-a-row Sunday Streets in the Mission schedule is just the first part of a grander plan. Here’s the deal:

Sunday Streets Mission Community Meeting
Monday, March 19, 2012
6:30 pm
Brava Theater, 2781 24th Street (x York)

Come participate in a discussion about Sunday Streets 4-series pilot project in the Mission. The Mission Sunday Streets Pilot features four consecutive events the first Sundays in May, June, July and August (5/6, 6/3, 7/1, 8/5) on the popular Mission route – Valencia from 14th-24th and 24th Street from Valencia to Hampshire.

The purpose of this pilot is to explore the feasibility of holding more frequent Sunday Streets events on an established route. Our first step is to hold one Sunday Streets per month in the Mission on a regular schedule for consistency – the 1st Sunday of each month – to see what the challenges are and how it works for the community. We will be doing an Economic Analysis among businesses along the route, and gathering input from residents, business owners, local employees, religious institutions to gauge the impacts and support for the idea of having a regular Sunday Streets route in the Mission (or in another area of the City if it does not work out here).

Sunday Streets presenting City agency, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is offering flat rate parking in two Mission area garages on Sunday Streets days: $10 for the Mission Bartlett garage, and $7 at SF General for all vehicles entering from 6:00 am to noon, the flat rate covers parking until 6:00 pm. Vehicles entering after 12 noon pay the hourly rate.

Senior staff from Sunday Streets presenting agencies, Livable City and SFMTA will be present to answer questions, address concerns and take input from the those in attendance. We look forward to the opportunity to discuss this program with the community on Monday, March 19th.

Sounds good to me. Let every Sunday be a Sunday Streets Sunday!

Lots more partial Dolores Park closures forthcoming

If we wanna enjoy the new Dolores Park, we’re gonna have to wait a while and put up with a lot of closures. Mission Local reports:

If all goes according to plan, preparations for the renovations will start in September. Crews will start working on the 20th and Church streets overlook, the 20th Street MUNI stop, the path between the playground and the promenade and the picnic areas.

The first of two phases will start in February 2013 with the closing of the south side of the park, the west part of the promenade, the bridge and the Hidalgo statue overlook. That phase should end in August 2013.

The second phase will  follow between September 2013 and July 2014. During that phase, the north side of the park will be closed as will the east part of the promenade and the 19th Street entry plaza.

Which means basically that for most of the next two years, we’re without a fully functioning park. Whole waves of new transplants will come and go without ever having known what a day in Dolores is truly like. Read on.

Mission Street repaving project means Muni moves to South Van Ness

Mission Local reports:

Work along Mission Street is set to begin in March and will last six months, according to DPW.

Muni buses that run along Mission Street, including the 14 Mission — the third busiest line in the city — and the 49 Van Ness-Mission, will be rerouted onto South Van Ness Avenue.

Power outage at Rainbow means the time is right for an Ezekiel-bread-and-goat-gouda heist

Vegansaurus is on the scene:

[I]t’s really creepy in rainbow without the lights on! Do you think there will be a grocery heist?? [link]

Yikes! Definitely creepy. Better head elsewhere if you were planning on picking up some fancy orange juice for tomorrow’s mimosas.
