Real jazz musicians pet dogs during their solos

Our pal Joshua checked out the free jazz show at Explorist International and had this to say:

At one point a dog wandered in, the drummer paused to pet the dog and the other musicians sorta filled in for the missing beats only to have the drummer jump back in at the right moment, free jazz at it’s best.

Hear that jazzbos? Don’t let a little thing like “being in the middle of a performance” keep you from taking care of business. Work it into your solo. Read on for the full typo-ridden review.

Humphry Slocombe’s not-so-secret breakfast

Good news for ice cream fans: Humphry Slocombe is working on a book of their ice cream recipes. That means you’ll be able to make your own Secret Breakfast (corn flakes and bourbon ice cream, duh) at home.

Wait, you can make ice cream at home? Yup. Apparently the recipes will show you how to do it using a $50 Cuisine Art appliance you can pick up at a department store. The book comes out in about a year, which is only slightly slower than actually waiting in line at their store.

Does this mean a Jasper Slowbrushe recipe book is to follow? I’ve been dying to crack the code behind their French Fries & Durian Aioli flavor.

Support your local awesome guy

Our buddy Suz reminds us of just a couple of the many reasons we should patronize Mission: Comics and Art.

Plus, don’t miss tomorrow night’s big event!

Thanks, Suz!

Benny Gold bids so long to 21st Street

True story – Benny and his designer duds are saying goodbye to his eponymous retail store on 21st and Capp in mid-April in favor of a bigger, swankier spot somewhere on 16th.  Straight from his website:

As much as we love our current store we have outgrown it in a short amount of time. I can’t wait to show you the new space! The store buildout is coming along nicely and we are set to move next month… it is going to be great! Thank you for all the support that has made this possible and we hope to see you at our grand opening party!

Two things: 1.) Pumped that he’s crushing it and that business is booming; great to see an SF local do big things, and 2.) Would it be appropriate if I wear my gold leggings to the opening? I’m thinking yes.

‘For rent’ sign down, paper up at Discolandia

Reader Rob T. noticed the change this morning (and took this picture and wrote the above headline).

Does this mean something’s up? Grand plans in the works? An exciting new era about to dawn?

New Mission Bicycle Video

Our pals at Mission Bicycle have a new promo video done by 4SP Films, the same guys that did the Tartine Bread one a while ago. It looks great and has nice shots of the ‘hood.

Jefferson adds:

They were pretty awesome to work with but they wanted to crop out a bit where a dog is taking a leak in and otherwise beautiful shot.  I said NO WAY.  It’s one of my favorite bits.  Gotta look close though, it’s just a quick flash.

Bonus dog peeing shot!

Your Mom’s Cocktails

Your Mom's Cocktails

We Be Sushi is awesome. Their sushi is reasonably priced and super tasty. Sometimes your server will even give you a personality reading with your food. Not in a rude way, in an . . . intuitive way.

The thing that always boggled me about this place is the sign out front. We Be serves beer, sake, that kind of thing, but I haven’t seen any liquid actually being mixed. And nothing in a martini glass. The plain looking sign on top suggests that the sushi is made the way that somebody’s mom made. The sign below is more specific. It’s also specifically awesome.

So, what’s the deal with the sign? It’s been a sushi restaurant for over 20 years, did they ever have a full bar? According to a server who’s worked there for a while the cocktail sign is actually original, even though they never had cocktails. At some point the sign was made special for the owner. She pointed him out behind the counter, expertly rolling sushi, and said that the mother’s face is actually his own.

At that point I kind of figured I had gotten enough of the story. Better to leave the rest to conjecture. The fact that it fits that well and is also totally out of place is part of what I love about it.

Taqueria La Vallarta’s All-Day Breakfast Special

7am-10pm! Does it even qualify as a “special” at that point? Maybe I’m just a square. It’s 2011 and Taqueria La Vallarta clearly doesn’t care what my old-fashioned idea of what breakfast is. That’s cool. Don’t mess with brunch, though. That’s sacred.

What’s next, all-day “happy hour” at 24th Street bars? I hope so.

Get Hella Excited About Books

Pedro from Adobe got in touch to plead for help getting people excited about “reading” again. I was like, “People love reading!” And he was like, “But it’s not really reading unless they’re reading musty old bound stacks of stale paper!” And I was like, “I dunno man, times are a-changing.” And then Pedro hit me with a folding chair! And his buddies were all, “Die, blogger, die!” And then they all started kicking me, and I was begging for my life.

They agreed to let me go if I’d help publicize their little book sale. Whatever:

Adobe Books has been a sacred place for music and arts in the mission for over 20 years. It’s been having some rough times, so we’re trying to get people excited about reading again, esp. used books. It’s a $1-$5 dollar sale on selected books. We’ll have snacks, and we’ll be playing all our favorite lit-inspired songs.

Lit-inspired songs! Wheeee!!

But seriously, Adobe rules. RSVP and invite your friends here.
