Pizza deal of the century

Forget Popeye’s Two for Tuesday. Unless Pizza Love has painted a couple of extra digits since Friday, this is looking like the end of world hunger (or at least the end to hunger when you’re totally slizzered and starving on a Saturday night).

Danny Bowien outraged over Popeye’s Two for Tuesday price hike

Bowien, chef at Mission Chinese Food, remarked that the Popeye’s Two for Tuesday increase (from $1 to $1.29) was “fucking bullshit” on a recent feature on Vice TV, the natural next step up from his Martha Stewart appearance.

Why isn’t the neighborhood in an uproar about this?

Oh if you want, you can see the rest of the episode here. My takeways: we’ve all probably eaten some of Danny’s hair, cleaning a live crab is gnarly as hell, and Spices is about to get some long-ass wait lists.

Themes and vendors will range from Surfers to Vintage to Palm Readers to Jewelers to Japanese Dessert Makers & more!

Look for a wild selection of local artists setting up shop and hawking their goods at this evening bazaar. Three nights only! March 8-10 2012. 6pm to Late.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema founder takes us inside the New Mission Theater

For the past decade, the interior of the New Mission Theater could only be seen by curious developers and graffiti artists who could climb real high. Lucky for the rest of us, Tim League, the founder of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema released some photos from his last visit to the site.

Tim seems pretty stoked to work on this project, calling San Francisco his “favorite city in the world” and the place his parents met. He fully plans to restore the site to its historic architectural glory. I, personally, can’t wait to enjoy that historic architectural glory myself (with a pint and Back to the Future 2).

The rest of the photos can be seen here, and the Drafthouse blog.

Contest: Learn how to fix a flat (finally)

Hey you!  Yeah you there, the one with the funny haircut.  Do you know how to fix a flat on your bicycle?  Whaaaaat???  Why not?!?  What are you gonna do when you’re in the middle of nowhere on a beautiful ride and you hear that instantly recognizable hiss emanating from your tire?

Luckily, your friends at Mission Bicycle have the answer:

At this hands-on workshop, we’ll start with the basics, then give you the tricks and secrets of fast and easy flat fixing.
At the 11 AM session, we’ll get jacked on Fayes coffee and Pepple’s vegan donuts.  At the 5 PM session we’ll savor fresh Firebrand pretzels and ice cold beer (Anchor Steam and IBC).
We’ll even send you home with a set of our favorite tire levers.
We end the session with a group ride – a tour of the Mission District’s 11 bike related businesses.
One last thing.  No spectators allowed.  Nobody admitted without a bike.  Come prepared to get your hands dirty.

Of course, it wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t have two (2) free tickets to give away! All you have to do is tell a little story in the comments about a time when not knowing how to fix a flat really ruined your day. The contest closes at 5pm on Wednesday and entries will be judged on merit.

And if you just want to be sure that you get in on this, you can also register for the class here.

Are you ready for more food trucks in The Mission?

Here’s the reason for the distorted ratio of food trucks to people who would eat at food trucks in the Mission:

Currently, food trucks aren’t allowed to park within 1,500 feet of a middle school or high school — as several members of his working group have pointed out, that’s 500 feet more than the limits imposed on medical marijuana dispensaries. “This puts off limits huge swaths of the city, including most of the Mission,” Wiener adds, encouraging what he calls “overconcentration” of trucks downtown.

The quote is from Supervisor Scott Weiner, who is working on legislation that will open up more of the city. Personally, I’m conflicted, since food trucks are so tasty but have long lines of people wearing hats and terrible graphic design. Still, senseless laws are senseless, especially when they interfere with someone making a buck. What do you think?

What do a giraffe and an apatosaurus (brontosaurus?) have in common?

Now if we’re talking about a brachiosaurus, that’s an entirely different matter!

And don’t forget that today is Official Kitten Sleep Appreciation Day!

Remember to support your local video store!  And this one too!

The Chipmunks love La Mejor Bakery

And I love it too!  Perhaps it’s the location and delightful panaderia aroma wafting out every time I pass by on my way home from work, or maybe it’s the fact that there’s always a bunch of dudes watching soccer in there, but there’s something about this place that gets me.

What’s your favorite panaderia spot?
