Raver Breakfast Special

At El Cafe Tazo. It’s not my favorite place, they always seem really disinterested in interacting with me. But for the sake of my sanity I may need to start buying these breakfast specials.

Diary TONIGHT at Pop’s

You may have heard that Diary, everyone’s favorite emo night, is moving to Saturday nights. The first one is tonight: 9 PM at Pop’s. Don’t miss out, Emo karaoke is the perfect opportunity to show off that you can still sing along with every word in Cop by Alkaline Trio!

If you’re confused by emo, the Diary guys put together a great mix for SF Weekly. Personally, I’m hoping to hear Embrace, Mineral, and Knapsack tonight.

P.S. You guys remember the Emo Game, right? (Disclaimer: I don’t support what I remember to be the rampant, messed up use of rape in the storyline. I’m in it for the pixel drawings and 7-inches.)

Planned Parenthood protestors just want to give you ‘the truth’

Mission Local spent some time with the anti-choice geezers forever posted up outside Planned Parenthood:

On a recent Friday afternoon, Ron Konopaski, 71, sets up a folding chair outside the clinic. It’s closed today, but that doesn’t matter. The retired dentist has been here every day since March 9. His duty is to ensure that at least two people are in front of the clinic at all times.

Konopaski and his fellow activists believe that abortion, even when due to rape, is an abomination to God’s plan. To them, the elements of a person begin at fertilization — a new life that no one other than God has the right to take.

“We’re trying to just give them the truth,” says Konopaski.

Mission BBQ: 1906 post-disaster style

Melissa shared this amazing picture on her Tumblr last week.

This is my great-great-grandfather Elijah with his family, in front of their house in the Mission district, a house I walk by all the time. Why is there a tea kettle and miniature stove on the sidewalk, you ask? Well, on this particularly portentous day, an enormous earthquake had struck San Francisco, and many families moved their kitchens into the street so as to prevent fires (83 years later, I have a distinct childhood memory of all the families on our block barbecuing the night after the ‘89 earthquake struck for the same reason).

Busy hipsters have epic to-do lists

Somebody left this in reader Chad V’s bar last night:

Says Chad:

We all shit ourselves at the “plan chest piece” entry.

No doubt. Thanks, Chad!

The prettiest street corner in the Mission?

image

I love walking by the 23rd and Guerrero Market at night. It reminds me of that scene in Lady and the Tramp where they’re eating meatballs — it’s so back alley but adorable at the same time.

Hipster or homeless?

hipster, homeless, mission district, san francisco, dolores park, bum

The answer is: both! See you at the park this weekend!

Humanitravels scavenger hunt this Saturday!

Ooh, this sounds fun!  New local volunteer travel agency Humanitravels, who specialize in sending clients to Peru and Guatemala on volunteer vacations, is opening its doors for the first time and to celebrate are holding an urban scavenger hunt in the Mission:

Participants will race around the neighborhood solving Latin America and volunteering based challenges. We’ll use the richness of the neighborhood to fuel the hunt. Some clues will be found in Mission murals, other in local non-profits, others still in local businesses which are also contributing grab bag prizes.

There’s loads of prizes as well including local restaurant gift certificates, discounted trips and random dollar store finds.

If you’re  not doing anything on Saturday come out and join!  The fun starts at Reaction Restaurant (2183 Mission St. @ 18th) and lasts from 2pm – 5pm!  Check out the Facebook event page for more details.
