Tonight: Adventureneering Lessons

Mark Roquet writes:

Lessons in Adventureneering is a monthly variety show at Dog Eared Books that features music, comedy, educational lectures (sometimes real and sometimes fake) and live science demonstrations.

Past events have included live World War I reenactments, championship yo-yo-ing, fake food products, and a volcano. It is always free and always on the first Wednesday of the month.

The upcoming show on Wednesday March 4 at 7:30 features two bands, the twangy Fancy Dan Band and the Mission’s own The Yellow Dress, and a lecture on advanced robotics detection. Should be a good time.

Thanks, Mark!

Gentrification Laughs

From a classic Onion opinion piece:

The problem is that the property owners here are clueless. They fill their yards with pavement and statues of the Virgin Mary, when all they have to do is clear that brush and we’d have a great beer garden or bocce court. They’re spending all this money to renovate the old church, when it’d be put to better use split it up into condos. My landlord has no idea this apartment—hell, every apartment in this building—is undervalued. He could quadruple his profits by cutting my place in half.

Sometimes I Feel Like I’m The Only One Trying To Gentrify This Neighborhood.

The State Of The State

Bummers aside, I’m in a good mood. Today, I’m in the national Onion: The State’s David Wain, Thomas Lennon and Kerri Kenney-Silver

Put Some Bacon On It

Everything is better with bacon on it. Blogs are no exception.

The Mission Gets Sketchy

If anybody still thinks the Dark Room is where Sketchfest dumps all the boring stuff, think again. I just learned that last week’s lineup included Elephant Larry, whose Optical Illusion Girlfriend video totally owned Digg this week. So I asked Rhiannon from the Dark Room to tell us a little more about what the shows are like, and what’s in store for this weekend — the final weekend of the festival. Rhiannon says:

Generally, they’re shorter sets from more experimental non-local sketch groups and local groups. I’m looking forward to Saturday’s late show, because Things We Made is one of my favorite acts in town, and the crowd loved Piano Fight last week. Friday’s late show looks good as well. It’s always fun. We have three groups a show as opposed to two at the Eureka, so the show’s a little quicker paced, a little more… Well, fun, for me anyway.

Note as well that Groomed for Success (Beth Lisick and Tara Jespen) are performing both nights. Advance tickets are recommended, and available via the Sketchfest or Dark Room websites.

Fridays and Saturday through the end of the month, The Dark Room is home to “SF Sketchfest in the Mission,” a showcase of up-and-coming talents.

One such talent, The Birthday Boys, take the stage tonight. The above video is funny enough, but the thing that makes me think this could really be worthwhile is the following message I got last night from a comedy industry professional with every reason to be jaded and unimpressed:

Am currently at intermission for the TV Funhouse show and a group called The Birthday Boys opened. They were great (I was laughing a ton in the back – and I wouldn’t bs about comedy).

Showtime is 10:30pm. Also of note is an 8pm show featuring musical guest Uni and Her Ukelele.

[Administrative note: This is my first time using vodpod. Please drop me a line if it does anything weird.]

Teenage Mutant Ninja Poodle

Gravel & Gold is a little shop at 18th and Treat. I’ve never been, but I like their blog. Largely because of stuff like this coverage of a pet groomer doing some next-level shit. Link.

Walken in a Winter Wonderland

Rhiannon and her friends at The Dark Room premiere a new work tonight:

So [I am Snowmiser: Walken in a Winter Wonderland] is an awesome, silly, ridiculous Christmas Cabaret starring Sean Owens as Christopher Walken. The Premise is that Walken was originally cast in all of those [censored] (but we never say the name, they love their copyright) Christmas Specials. He’s telling his memoirs to an interviewer/biographer person (Sherilyn Connelly) and this comes out. Musical Memory Hilarity ensues.
