Drink of the Week: Radeberger Zwickel, for the first time in the US

FullSizeRender 12

It’s a Radeberger beer that’s not just regular ol’ Radeberger! It’s still a pilsner, but it’s unfiltered! And really good. And so tall, I couldn’t fit the whole thing in the picture!

Available now at Schmidt’s.

Photo and review by Chef Deborah from Black Sands in the Lower Haight:

I am usually such a hot sauce slut. But this Nashville hot chicken just made an honest diner out of me. I AM SWEATING like a whore in a church

That chicken must be HOT!

Haha the Cafe Gratitude founders eat tons of meat now and vegans are PISSED

Also haha, love this old photo.

The Guardian reports:

The California-based husband and wife founders of celebrity-endorsed vegan restaurant group Cafe Gratitude say they have received death threats after it was revealed last week that they are raising, slaughtering and eating animals on their farm north of San Francisco.

Matthew and Terces Engelhart, both in their sixties, who opened the first Cafe Gratitude in 2004 and whose celebrity followers have included Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyoncé and Sacha Baron Cohen, countered the firestorm of criticism with a defense of the “regenerative agriculture” methods they now use on their Be Love Farm in Vacaville, calling it a personal choice made in the privacy of their home.

Read on for lots more on the firestorm of criticism.

(Also, I noticed the grilled cheese place that took over the old Cafe Gratitude space in the Mission has closed up shop. I wonder what’s gonna happen there.)

The best sandwich in SF is Pink Zebra’s “Crokune”

Screen Shot 2016-05-02 at 11.00.11 AM

It’s a skewer of tsukune (chicken meatball), hot off the yakitori grill, and they pop it on an everything croissant (by Neighbor Bakehouse in the Dogpatch), along with some tasty sauce! It’s the best! I could’ve eaten four in a row, but I only had two, and then I just dreamed about it for a rest of the weekend, and I wish I could have another one right now. It’s the best sandwich in SF!

Problem is, Pink Zebra‘s yakitori popup is only every now and then, so keep an eye on their Instagram for dates and times.

These AWESOME sandwiches I had at Clare’s Deli today

FullSizeRender 11

In the foreground is the “Purple Rain,” which features a really nice helping of smashed blackberries. It’s the best use of fruit on a sandwich since the ham and banana sandwich at Cafe St. Jorge.

In the background is the “Island,” which has some shrimps and some slaw and this AMAZING kinda-hot-kinda-sweet sauce.

They were both on today’s specials board, so I’m not sure how long they’ll be around, but Clare’s Deli is doing lots of great stuff lately, so do check it out.
