Obsessed With Denim

The Denim Maven, one of our favorite tipsters, tells us NYC-based Freeman’s Sporting Club is about to open up its third shop, at 18th and Valencia in the space recently vacated by Amore Animal Supply. From the Freeman’s “about” page:

F.S.C. was established to pay tribute to the vanishing art of American handmade goods, the quality and durability inherent to something made by skilled artisans. These tenets form the foundation on which Freemans Sporting Club is built.

Based on 18th and 19th century sutleries, which were expeditionary general stores that offered the paramount essentials to settlers and soldiers. F.S.C. offers a roughly hewn yet refined reinterpretation of this bygone era, one in which a man’s garments were made to be both functional and long lasting.

Sounds like a good fit for a modernified frontier city like SF!

Note: When I first read “Freeman’s Sporting Club” in the subject of the D. Maven’s email, I was sooo hoping it had something to do with ping pong. Alas.

Even though they both say they didn’t plan this out, I’m still skeptical.  Of course, I suppose there’s always the possibility that Katie and Shannon each could have gotten ready for the night separately while watching that 60s France Gall video starring Sexpigeon and felt similarly inspired.

Usually I’m wholeheartedly against pets wearing outfits, but this was just too ridiculous.  Fantastic retro color scheme for the vest (with strikingly strategic peace patch placement), augmented by a similarly-pigmented bone shirt worn underneath?  And his fur matches too?

Probably the only time I’ve ever been jealous of a dog’s ensemble.  If anyone can recreate this outfit in human clothes, I will gladly wear it out to Mission Mission’s office hours (usually Wednesdays at Bender’s) for all to see.  I don’t even care that there aren’t any pants.

I’m not sure what it is exactly, but something about the holidays and the new year always makes me feel like an old dude.  Like, “Whoa, it’s 2011 already?  What happened to the last decade?”  Luckily, our pal Kris went treasure hunting in a dollar store and found a hat that will make anyone feel like the hippest old dude around.  In terms of all-time dollar store triumphs, it comes this close to beating last year’s amazing Black Santa blowout.

When he’s not spelunking for unbelievable dollar store discoveries, Kris also makes some pretty excellent late night Thai food at his restaurant, NIGHT + MARKET.  Check it out if you’re ever in LA!

Don’t worry dude!  No way am I going to mess with a guy wearing fingerless Misfits gloves in the morning.  That sure is a lot of presents though.  Can’t you spare just one?

You go into the shop, pick custom colors for pretty much every panel and piece of trim on the bag, and then you pick your map. They don’t have every street in the neighborhood (sorry, San Carlos), but they have most of the best ones. You can map your favorite intersection, or series of intersections, or have some parallels, or some parallels and some intersections. And then, you align them on a grid (diagonal or horizontal), and you’ve got your very own personalized map emblazoned on the back of your deluxe, locally fabricated messenger bag! And all for less than $100!
