Jeans for Japan

If anyone in the Mission knows anything about Japan, it’s Kiya from Self Edge. His shop specializes in Japanese reproductions of vintage American garments, so his work takes him overseas pretty often, looking at product, checking out production facilities, meeting the people fueling this distinctive subculture that is denim obsession.

So, if you want to aid Japan by patronizing local Mission businesses, Self Edge might be a great place to start.

P.S. Look how well my four-month-old ringrings are breaking in:

MM at SXSW: Forlorn Candy Corn t-shirt!

I saw this guy’s shirt and ran up to him, screaming, “I LOVE FORLORN CANDY CORN!”

I explained that I was a fan of the wheatpastes and whatnot we see around SF (and elsewhere) from time to time, and he explained that they’re all done by a dude from Austin (which we already knew I guess), and that a local Austin company called Industry decided to throw it on a t-shirt. Bomb.

What a cute couple though, right? I think we’d just watched Ted Leo and were getting ready to head up the hill for !!!.

MM at SXSW: Two girls, one dress

See ‘em? A little funny. A crowd of 30 or 40, and two of them show up identical?

Maybe Puma was handing them out at the gate.

MM at SXSW: ‘Dick’ boots

That’s Bay Area celebrity DJ Wam Bam Ashleyanne helping you spot the “Dick.” Thanks, Ashleyanne!

MM at SXSW: Kickass janky tattoo

MM at SXSW: Ferocious tiger shirt looks ferocious

MM at SXSW: Cold War Kids bassist’s t-shirt depicts Sofia Loren flanked by traditional Filipino giant wooden fork and spoon

Like, huh?

But I like it.

MM at SXSW: Plastic bag hat

Hot new look for spring?

I suppose, but I can’t imagine it’s very comfortable in this 85-degree heat. (Jealoussss??)

But seriously, he was serious about this hat. Wore it confidently for minutes upon minutes in this long line to get into the free Strokes show, which was awesome.

MM at SXSW: Philipp Minnig of Sugar and Gold pimps Puma

Ran into him by the Puma tent. Puma shoes, Puma headband. The tattered pink suspenders are probably Puma too.

San Francisco’s own Sugar & Gold play the Antenna Farm showcase Friday night at SXSW.

Handerpants

I can’t decide whether this is the greatest thing ever or the worst, but either way I can’t stop thinking of an udder.

For better or worse . . . Handerpants.

(Thanks Ken Chino!)
