Support your local elementary school by watching a Mexican wrestling match on Sunday afternoon

625807-250

Here’s how it works:

Come support the 260 students of Marshall Elementary School, a public elementary school located in the heart of the Mission District in San Francisco. The school has many Latino families, and we are always trying to provide events to bring some of that Latino flair to our fundraisers!

Lucha Libre Mexicana is our annual Mexican wrestling event. Promo Lucha Azteca provides the ring and the wrestlers, and Marshall provides the space, manages the tickets, and sells concessions (such as hot dogs and popcorn).

The money raised helps the PTA support the many programs it provides for the students, specifically programs in science, technology, physical education, community building, and teamwork. As a PTA, we typically have to raise between $50,000 and $60,000 each year to fill in the gaps in the public school budget. Many of our families are lower income families, so we are looking for events that allow the community to help, while having some fun at the same time.

Watch a live broadcast of a video game (Starcraft 2) championship in a bar (Pop’s) this weekend

I just got invited to an event called “Starcraft 2 WCS Finals Live” at Pop’s on Saturday afternoon. Here is the description:

Live Broadcast of WCS Finals from Blizzcon, with big screens, audio and fun people hanging out hard.

I don’t understand what basically any of those words mean, but my pal Nick Pal is hosting this thing I think, and the things he does (like his old booze column here on Mission Mission, Eighty-Five Song Happy Hour which also takes place at Pop’s, or his super fun radio show on BFF) are always pretty cool.

And I know from experience that Pop’s is a great place for watching televised competitions.

What are we doing for Halloween???

Honestly I think we’re just gonna stay in on the 31st. The 30th is where the party’s at. The way I see it there are three options, all involving punk and/or disco…

There’s the punk option:

12140142_10205244062686788_1116142340367682770_o

Teenage Dance Craze welcomes Halloween with a super spectacular celebration of wild teenage rock & roll and crazy mixed up tricks & treats featuring THE BEAT OFFS as THE B 52s + SLICK as TOMMY JAMES & THE SHONDELLS + DIRTY DENIM as THE DEAD GIRLS + POW! as X RAY SPEX & THE TDC DJs RUSSELL QUAN, OKIE ORAN & dX THE FUNKY GRANPAW spinning insanely delicious rock & roll racket on vinyl in between sets and after the show dance party!

There’s the disco option:

11705820_1025546384134059_981230640744325754_o

DJs Jamie Jams and Emdee return with a spooky Halloween cover set of all Daft Punk! And in the back room, a classic early 2000′s set by Rocky as Mira Aroyo of Ladytron! Plus fog, lasers and a screening of electroclash cult classic, Liquid Sky. *FREE in 2000′s themed costume all night.

And finally there’s the punk vs. disco option:

NY '77

>>>>>> NY ’77 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

• DJ sets (of more punk and disco) by BEAUREGARD & NUTZEFFEKT

Decisions, decisions.

Drama Talk & Drinks: Curran – Under Construction

We had no idea that the Curran Theater was under construction. We were also pleasantly surprised that they are using this time as an opportunity to give audiences a unique experience. While the theater is going through a face lift, they are inviting audiences to gather on stage, and witness their performance pieces up close. We were fortunate to be able to catch the first piece of the series Object Lesson created and performed by Geoff Sobelle:

https://img.evbuc.com/https%3A%2F%2Fimg.evbuc.com%2Fhttp%253A%252F%252Fcdn.evbuc.com%252Fimages%252F15544261%252F149484140175%252F1%252Foriginal.jpg%3Frect%3D0%252C0%252C1280%252C640%26s%3D1c29a7d1aac0d9b98ea26fe02dc43f6a?h=230&w=460&s=3bdfda949eef7e326638832645645897

Katie: I can’t think of the last time I saw something that interesting and refreshing. It was fucking delightful.

Brittany: It was such a cool use of space. It was awesome to be on the stage of the Curran amidst all the boxes that you get to look around and play in and all of the sudden a show starts. It was like a magic show meets really cool art installation meets really cool performance piece.  I think he did a great job of capturing that moment of nostalgia that unites the way that people experience their lives.

* Unfortunately Object Lesson only runs this weekend and is sold out (wow this post is such a tease) but if this show is any indication of how innovative this series will be, then this will be some of the most interesting pieces of theater you will ever see.

Third annual 20th Street Block Party is this weekend!

This year’s 20th Street Block Party is looking bigger and better than ever:

Noise Pop and Ne Timeas Restaurant Group are proud to present the third annual 20th Street Block Party on Saturday, September 12, 2015.

The 20th Street corridor will be transformed into a free party to showcase and celebrate a diverse neighborhood that blends modern ideas with community traditions to create a new San Francisco experience. This free, delicious summer feast and dance party will feature some of the city’s best restaurants, local businesses and artisans as well as a variety of indie bands and DJs.

As we mentioned earlier this week, the newly reunited Dominant Legs are playing (at 4:20pm, don’t be tardy), but there’s also headliner Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, plus Nick Waterhouse and a bunch of other acts. See the lineup and schedule here.

As for food, they’ve got workshops and specials and enough food-related stuff to pack your afternoon. Full (really long) list of food vendors and programming here.

And if all that music and food isn’t enough, there are some art installations and some DIY activities and live radio! Read all about it here.

Lastly, if you wanna really live it up, get yourself a VIP ticket (which includes private viewing areas and restrooms, free drinks and food, limited edition merch, AND a mixtape).

Reminder: Guac-Off is coming soon!

Saturday, September 12, 2015, Guac-Off is gonna be wiiiiild.
