ARTCRANK is putting on yet another annual show of handmade, bike-themed posters designed by Bay Area artists, and the opening is this Friday, September 12, 5-10pm, at SOMArts (934 Brannan Street)!

The signed, limited edition prints are available that night for one night only, and proceeds will benefit the San Francisco Bike Coalition. And there will be beer of the craft variety! Go support and party with your local artists, and score a gorgeous poster (or several) for your walls!

Jefferson from Mission Bicycle Company recently contacted us with the following warning:

There are so many bikes stolen in this city it’s ridiculous. Most stolen bikes were:

• Not locked up at all but left in a “secure” places like a garage.
• Not locked up with a quality lock (cheap generic u-lock or cable lock)
• Not locked up properly (Front wheel only, locked up to a wooden rail, etc.).

This past week we saw two bikes stolen within around 24 hour hours of each other. Both locked up properly, with quality u-locks. Both were twisted open.

• Wednesday 8/27  8:30 PM – 3:00 AM – 18th Street between Church & Sanchez
• Thursday 8/28  10:00 PM – 12:30 AM – Alabama between 19th & 20th.

If anyone hears of a bike stolen using a similar method, I would encourage them to file a police report and send a tweet to https://twitter.com/SFPDBikeTheft.

Let’s work together to nail “The Twister”!!!

As you can see, it’s basically a special bike path that exists a little higher than street level and a little lower than the sidewalk. The SF Bike Coalition reports:

The showcase bikeway is part of the Mission/Valencia Gateway project and will stretch southbound on Valencia Street from Cesar Chavez Street to Duncan Street.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2015 and continue until mid-2016. When completed, the Mission Valencia Green Gateway will create an improved link between the Valencia and San José corridors, making the North to South Connecting the City route even safer and more comfortable for everyone.

3D City is a year long stereoscopic photography project by Doctor Popular

Walking is for suckers. These folks know how to get around the neighborhood in style! Which reminds me, someday I’m-a get an exclusive 3D City photo shot with Segway-Poodle-Guy (Rocco and John, I believe). All shots taken in the Mission on my little Lumix 3D1.

The fine folks at Mission Bicycle Company were digging around in some public archives and came upon an awesome story. So they made a cool patch to commemorate it:

1894 found the United States in a deep depression. The infamous Pullman Strike crippled rail service west of Detroit all the way to the California coast, isolating San Francisco. No trains meant among other things, no mail.

In response, a bicycle mail route was organized totaling 210 miles, divided into 8 relays, and occupying 18 hours. The route offered to carry a letter via bicycle from one end to the other for $0.25.

This patch is a replica of the original stamp present on each letter carried. We retained the misspelling of San “Fransisco” for authenticity.

At least they didn’t call it Frisco! (Just kidding, that would’ve been fine.)
