It pays to be a puppy

Now isn’t that adorable?  And it takes a lot of effort on the part of the owner, too!  For all her furious pedaling, she was pretty much going at the exact speed that we were walking, which is why this photo is so in focus (unlike some of my other “masterpieces”).  Now, let’s see him a little bigger:

Awwwwwwwww!

David Byrne bike racks

I know that these aren’t new, but I’m still pretty jealous that New York gets all of these amazing bike racks designed by David Byrne.

Byrne designed each bike rack to be representative of the neighborhood it was installed in. What would these bike racks look like if they were designed for our city?

The invisible bicycle helmet?

What started as a school project for these two Swedish designers turned into 7 years of research, 10 million dollars in venture funding, and what might be the hot new solution to helmet hair. I’m not going to spoil it for you, so you should watch the video for yourself. If it works, it’d be pret-ty incredible.

Bike thief steals bicycle, tries to sell it on Craigslist, gets busted by its owner who TRACKS HIM DOWN from Portland to Seattle

Not sure if you’ve seen this already, but let this stand as testament to how much cyclists care about their bicycles and just how far they’ll go to recover their rides.  Check out the whole thing either here or below:

Two things about this:

1) When our protagonist attempts to make a citizen arrest, he doesn’t tackle the guy as an overzealous I may have done in that situation.  He keeps his cool and keeps documenting.

2) I’m totally wearing my lucky hat tomorrow.  And I’m never ever wearing a black shirt with green stripes.

Also, don’t forget to write down your bike’s serial number, which is the only way you can really prove that you’re its rightful owner.  And not on your wrist!  Save that for show stamps and slap bracelets!

Hot!

Gage and Desoto, the makers of the beauties, are all sold out right now, but it looks like they’ll be restocked in early September. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Happy park your bike like an asshole day!

In other news, hasn’t the weather been grand lately?

Bike swap in Dolores Park this Sunday

Here’s a thing that’s happening this weekend: Chrome Industries is holding their first ever bike swap in Dolores Park on Sunday. Perfect time to get rid of all those drop bars you swapped out for bullhorns, or all of those brakes you don’t actually use. I hear there’s free beer!

2 choices of bicycle wheel security

In the closer example, we have some exquisite custom brackets that are so difficult to dismantle that even Sheldon Brown admits that a prospective thief who somehow got the whole bike back to his secret evil lair of thievery would still have a hell of a time removing the wheel.

On the other hand, the farther bike goes for the color-coordinated DIY zip-tie method which, while perhaps not quite as secure, nonetheless would certainly still be a hassle to remove. And it looks quite stylish too! However, god forbid you actually have to remove the wheel from your frame–seems like it would be just as much of an ordeal for you as it would for the thieves.

Of course, we all know that all bicycles are on temporary loan from the universe, so it’s only a matter of time before something happens to yours. The best thing you can do is make it as difficult as possible on the jerks!
