Woah, deja vu.

Just like last year, an iPhone prototype was “misplaced” by an Apple employee. This time, in a Mission bar! Cava22, to be exact, a place surely devoid of tech-savvy hipsters hoping to sneak a peak.

The phone was lost in late July, but using the built-in tracking features it was traced to a home in Bernal Heights. When investigators arrived and questioned the guy, he recalled being at Cava22 but denied anything about having the phone.

Suuure, dude. So someone happened to throw it in your bag and you somehow managed to keep it charged for a month?

Can’t wait to see how this develops.

Another one happened at the Make-Out Room this evening. The victim had her purse right next to her, hanging on a hook with a jacket over it. Next thing she knows, the jacket is on the floor and the purse is gone. She looks for a it for a bit, reports it to the staff, goes home, starts canceling her cards. Already there is illicit activity on her accounts. Within minutes of the theft!

This ring is speedy, people. Keep your stuff close. Tell your friends.

I talked to some cops and some bystanders. Apparently two perps ran up on a kid and shot him around 11:30PM. He might be dead. The shooters fled northward on Hampshire.

Mission Local reports:

A 22-year-old cook who had just gotten off work at Hogs and Rock was shot and critically wounded at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday as he stood on San Carlos, just around the corner from the restaurant, witnesses said.

Police are saying that it looks like a case of mistaken identity and they are looking for two male suspects between the ages of 25 and 30.

A witness who lives in the building above Hogs & Rocks said she heard two young men ask the cook, who is also the father of two children, if he was in a gang. “No, no,” the cook responded.

I was watching a movie. I hear two gun shots, which were distinctly outside of the movie and sounded very premeditated, with a one second interval between them. I cracked my blinds and saw about five people standing around a body in front of Hog and Rocks, talking about witnesses. It took about a minute for several emergency vehicles (including police cruisers) to come in from every direction. I watch someone do emergency CPR for what felt like close to 15 minutes. Later, a crime scene investigator who had examined the body and the surrounding area walked by my window on the phone and said the gunman walked up to the victim and shot him twice in the head and walked off.

From our pal Anna:

I was having an excellent 29th birthday celebration, hanging and drinking and singing with friends at Jack’s for Thursday karaoke night. I had my purse tucked away with my friends’ various jackets on the bench in the corner, along with a bottle of wine in a gift bag that a friend brought for me. When we got ready to leave the bar around midnight, we found that the bottle of wine was there but my purse was gone. It was a purple cloth purse, with a long strap. This sort of ruined what was proving to be a really awesome birthday celebration. I’m hoping that someone picked it up by mistake, and/or took it on purpose but would now kindly like to return it to me.

And a similar thing happened to another friend of ours at Slow Jams at the Make-Out Room on Tuesday. (It’s like they’ve targeted all the best parties in the neighborhood — careful at Diary this weekend!) The thieves grabbed her purse off a hook under the bar while it was inches away from her, and then they identity thieved her mom! Keep an eye on your stuff, girls and European guys.

An email from reader Cat:

Someone (ostensibly a neighbor, since only they would have access) hopped my fence in the Mission/Potrero area, busted into our garage, and stole a bike from our Canadian friends who had ridden down here from Vancouver, as well as 2 guitars. I spoke to a cop who recommended the Laney Flea Market, by Laney College in the East Bay. Apparently, there are tons of stolen bikes there, and mostly if you show the guys a picture and tell them it’s your [stolen] bike, they’ll give it back to you to avoid trouble. The cop I spoke to was actually really committed to recovering stolen bikes, though he said that they only have about a 10% success rate. Still, better than nothing, right?

Also, the officer told me he recently recovered a Bianchi and a Fuji, so if anyone got one of those stolen recently, send me the details and I can let you know if it matches the description. Attached is a photo of the bike that was stolen. If anyone sees it, there is a reward, as it’s something a friend custom built.
