Trust Lemmy

Like I mentioned before, Cranky Old Mission Guy has a new blog (called Cranky Old Mission Guy). Start reading it on a regular basis and then you won’t have to rely on us for gems like this.

Who’s your interior decorator?

Epic.

Ancient Ohlone mural reproduction unveiling tonight

Muralists Jet Martinez, Bunnie Reiss and Ezra Eismont have recreated the ancient and hidden Ohlone mural of Mission Dolores. In case you missed the kickstarter campaign (and it looks like most of you did), a hidden mural was uncovered behind the church altar by Ben Wood and Eric Blind in 2004. It was painted by Ohlone Indians under the captivity guidance of Spanish missionaries in 1791.

The new piece resides at 22nd and Bartlett on the Mission Market building and will be unveiled tonight during the opening night of Mission Community Market, a not-a-farmer’s-market farmer’s market in the Mission. Stop by from 4-8pm for the festivities, music, food, and a pre-requisite David Campos appearance.

The loneliest places in San Francisco

Local lonely boy David Enos today published the first of a new series titled Loneliest Places in SF. Seen above, #1 is Van Ness Station. That’s real talk.

If you’ve got suggestions for future installments, please leave ‘em below.

Invasion of the googly eyes

This little guy is but one of many googly eyed little guys currently partying in the Mission, and this photographic evidence comes courtesy of Moka.

Here‘s another, and another. And a whole bunch more.

Art school ain’t easy

Like a million years ago we published a post addressing the idea that maybe Academy of Art diplomas aren’t good for shit. It continues to get new comments on a regular basis. Here’s one now:

If your hatin’ then you obviously didn’t have what it takes to succeed in the real world as a creative person. I am sure it is a lot easier to try to bring down an organization by slandering it as opposed to busting your ass and trying to accomplish something with the opportunity that you have or had.

The hard fact is that the economy sucks and that means that you have to be even more badass than everyone else out there just to get a paycheck.

On top of that, a lot of people get the misconception that “Art” school is easy. Wrong.

Dang. I guess I shall cease considering art school. Read on.

Illustrated review of last week’s Radiolab show at the Brava Theater

Not sure how I missed this (oh yeah, I was in ‘nam), but WNYC’s Radiolab did a live taping at the Mission’s Brava Theater last week, hosted by another heavy hitter in the podcasting scene (and SF native!), Jesse Thorn. Illustrator Jay Sacher was there, and whipped up an excellent illustrated review at meathaus.com.

If you haven’t heard it, Radiolab is like the this American Life of science radio. They take a broad science topic, like “symmetry” in this case, and do a number of stories on it. Jay points out that their production is a bit cutesy and they sometimes glaze over the real science to drive their narrative home, but I maintain that it’s still an entertaining show and you should totally add it to your podcast list because it will totally impress people “in the know”.

Head over to meathaus.com for the full piece.

Comic Book Guide to the Mission art show this Saturday

Two Sundays ago it was raining pretty damn hard in the middle of the day. I ducked out of the storm at Mission Comics and Art where I got to watch a delightfully geeky discussion group about how lame the Star Wars prequels were and how epic Jeff Smith’s Bone series was. My kind of people! While I was there, I was finally able to pick up the Comic Book Guide to the Mission.

It’s a really great, intimate look at the Mission from the eyes of local artists. The book covers a lot of ground, including stories about being a lawyer dude trying to fit in at Pop’s, the hunt for the best taco, an anthropological observation of you-know-what-sters, and the history of Mission murals. Oh, and dating of course:

Speaking of Mission Comics and Art, Leef Smith and co. are hosting an art show featuring original panels from the CBGTTM. That would be a swell time to buy the book and meet some of the artists. It’s this Saturday, April 2nd  at 7pm. The store is on 20th and Mission.

Banksy’s buddy

Vibes

He’s got Vibes. New thing next to the old new thing.

We previously had Banksy Fever and maybe he did some jeans shopping.

Whimsical elfin door installation immediately obscured by whimsical rad dog graffiti

I went looking for those mini doors we’ve been hearing about by Jeff Waldman, and despite getting the location details from Mission Local, I could not find anything — only the above really rad Poochie effigy, which is truly a gem.

As you can see, I’m completely blind, and the door was right under my nose the whole time.  I only realized this when I got home to check the internet for any real photos of the doors; it probably would have been in my best interest to do that before exploring sketchy alleys and dodging cars for 60 minutes, but live and learn and maybe get my eyes checked out.

Here is the initial door installation on 14th and Valencia. And the one on 17th and Valencia? Not even there anymore.
