Ann Magnuson! Performing as David Bowie! This Thursday evening at SFMOMA! SFMOMA explains:
Magnuson is a performance artist, musician, and actress who defined 1980s downtown New York, marked college radio with her band Bongwater, and has graced everything from TV to Hollywood blockbuster thrillers. In her new tribute cabaret, she nods to Bowie with a song cycle of his early 1970s work. With musical direction by Kristian Hoffman, the performance gains power as Magnuson embodies Jobriath, the only openly gay star of the glam rock revolution. The performance also will incorporate dreams, Jung, human sacrifice, Aztec shamanism, and all things dark, bloody, and beautiful. Also, Blue Bottle Coffee and SFMOMA continue their BANQUET series on the Rooftop Garden.
Read on for costume contest details and more, and then RSVP and invite your friends!
To win tickets, tell us in the comments below why you love Ann Magnuson OR David Bowie. Most compelling entrant, based on merit, wins a pair of tickets to the party. Contest ends tomorrow (Wednesday, October 26, 2011) at noon.
Ran into Jihaari at karaoke last night. I was like, “Dude, what’s the deal with your show on Saturday??” And he was all, “Dude, it’s all about surfing and skating when I was a kid — only now I’m older.” (And then I had to go sing “Kiss with a Fist.”)
So it’s maybe gonna be kind of a nostalgia trip about being a skater in the ’80s and ’90s — but richer because it’s also about what it’s like to get older and watch things (and your own abilities) change. Sounds CHILL!
Looks rad! Curator Angela tells us all about it:
“Monster Show” is a big group show that pays tribute to classic monsters, ghouls, villains and horror movie characters, as well as sci-fi and cult films, and urban legends. It’s also a perfect kickoff to Halloween!

Artist and guests are invited to dress up for the occasion. We’re going to have horror movies screening all night, 2 radical DJs playing videogame/horror movie inspired music, plus a ton of surprises from the P1 crew.

This is but a small section of a piece published yesterday in The Daily Californian about what it’s like to ride BART from Berkeley to SF for a Cal Bears game at AT&T Park. See the rest.

Goforaloop explains:
Goforaloop Gallery and Studios presents The Potluck Art Series, an ongoing event, taking place the second Thursdays of every other month. Goforaloop’s diverse artists draw from their unique inspirations, styles and personal narratives creating a intriguing balance between individualized tone and community dialogue. You are invited to explore their engaging new works over delicious wine, great tunes and lively conversation, making Goforaloop’s Potluck Art Series a satiating addition to your San Francisco arts calendar.
The place is tucked away in a far corner of the neighborhood, back behind Potrero del Sol – back behind Jack’s – so clearly we should do our karaoke pre-game here. RSVP and invite your friends.
If were distracted by all the Blue Angel action, you may have missed the aerial marketing was all up in our sky’s business this weekend. Cranky Old Mission Guy snapped this choice shot that sums it up.
Advertising evils aside, it looks like now they are just using these sky printers to crap out perfectly aligned pixels in half the time. Where’s the artistry, the skill, the danger? No soul!

While not as mesmerizingly beautiful as the last map we featured here, this cartographic offering more than makes up for it with controversy. Available in a variety of colors here.
