Granny fashion

Fashionist featured this incredible grandma-influenced–err–grandma-inherited ensemble. The authenticity of this ‘fit goes as far as the underwear, though there are no shots of that, you dog.

Do you think your grandkids will be sporting our your neon fake Ray Bans, 40-year unwashed denim, V-neck T’s, and crusty Keds? Only time will tell.

Bikes and Beats at Public Works Friday

Are you itching to party in San Francisco’s arbitrarily-named neighborhood Somisspo? Well Bikes and Beats is going down there this Friday at Public Works. ‘Deep, who you know as the guy on the speaker-loaded tricycle, will be among the many DJs of the evening, so expect such crowd pleasers as MJ’s “Don’t stop ’til you get enough” . There will be eats, prizes, and bike crafts.

If you want to make a whole night of it, the event takes place at right after the Friday 7:30pm SF Bike Party, AKA the “nice” Critical Mass with bouncy castles. And don’t worry: there will be bike valet to handle the venue’s dire bike parking situation.

Man vs. 14 Mission vs. being punched in face

It’s an age-old question: is it faster to walk or take the 14 Mission bus? Duh, bike. But suppose your bike is in the shop or something… tough call. One Examiner reporter hoped to answer this with a good old-fashioned foot race.

I won’t spoil the ending, but it’s a close one and there is a face punch involved. Was it still worth saving the $2 fare? Probably. Read on at the Examiner.

Walk like an Egyptian Music Festival this weekend

Our pals at Zambaleta music school are throwing a kick-ass benefit show this weekend, featuring about 20 bands including Foxtails Brigade, Quinn DeVeaux, the Blank Tapes, and Kacey Johansing. Have you heard Kacey’s album? It’s pretty damn incredible.  Also playing is Glittersnatch, a supertrio featuring the best folk-singin’ babes in town: Megan Keely, Wolf Larsen, and Kelly McFarling. Listen as they harmonize prettily on their cover of Kids by MGMT:

The show is at the Restoration Workshop on 19th and Treat, which is actually a working restoration workshop that doubles as a great place for shows.

If you can’t afford the $5-$20 sliding scale cover, you can also volunteer at the show and score some free class credit at Zambaleta while you’re at it. Read on for the details.

Google declares new neighborhood ‘Somisspo’

Don’t call it south of the Market, north of the Mission, near Potrero Hill. It’s Somisspo.

According to Google, anyway. As our anonymous tipster says:

…it looks like those fellers at google are going on a cartographic joyride.

Not sure where they got that name, but there’s no way the source is as reliable as Johnny0. Hey are you reading this Google? Civic Valley. Make it happen.

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

UPDATE: And Royal Gate! -Allan

Don’t call it ‘Mariachi’

Here’s your daily dose of enthnomusisnobbery. Those guys walking around the Mission with guitars? Not Mariachi. Mariachis wear the Three Amigos getups and feature violins as the lead instrument (not just trumpets), according to this informative video:

It goes on to point out that if you want the real thing, you gotta go to San Jose or LA.

Use that on your next date at Cava 22 to impress. Here’s some sample copy: “Actually, this doesn’t quite fall under the Mariachi idiom.” Be sure to use an extra nasal and high-pitched voice when you say “actually”.

Bombay Bazaar and Ice Cream reopens

These have been popping up around the ‘hood. Looks like Bombay Ice Creamery is reopening on South Van Ness.

In other news, South Van Ness is the new Valencia.

Mission BBQ: 1906 post-disaster style

Melissa shared this amazing picture on her Tumblr last week.

This is my great-great-grandfather Elijah with his family, in front of their house in the Mission district, a house I walk by all the time. Why is there a tea kettle and miniature stove on the sidewalk, you ask? Well, on this particularly portentous day, an enormous earthquake had struck San Francisco, and many families moved their kitchens into the street so as to prevent fires (83 years later, I have a distinct childhood memory of all the families on our block barbecuing the night after the ‘89 earthquake struck for the same reason).

Read on here.

The Business turns 2 tonight!

Did you know that stand-up comedy, as we know it, started in San Francisco? It’s true! According to Joe Rogan on Episode 161 of the WTF podcast, anyway. He credits it to when Mark Twain first started giving hilarious speeches filled with wit and biting social commentary around town. Without Mark Twain, no Gallagher. Think about that.

Anyways, the other day I passed by Mission comedian Chris Garcia in the street, jumped in front of him, and blurted out, “CHRIS GARCIA!”. After this, I had no follow up other than a crazy wild-eyed stare. He looked at me a bit terrified. I followed up with, “Umm, yeah, sorry. I’m Vic from Mission Mission.”  He was like, “Oh hey! You should come to the Business this week. It’s our 2-year birthday.”

The Business is a weekly comedy showcase at the Dark Room featuring Chris, Sean Keane, Alex Koll, and Bucky Sinister. They also feature out-of-town comedians passing through. Why not take part in the rich history of San Francisco comedy and check them out tonight? The show starts at 8pm. Here is the event page.

Also, Chris Garcia (as Dr. 4:20) wishes you a happy day:

La Lengua microhood gets even more validity

More congrats to Johnny0 (aka Burrito Justice), who single-handedly named a neighborhood using only his imagination and a series of tubes. This takes some serious chops. I should know, as I was totally unsuccessful in my attempts to coin “Civic Valley“.

In the latest installment of this saga, the SF Examiner took an interest in this story and wrote it up. They declare:

So welcome to La Lengua, the Mission district-Bernal Heights microhood that needed a name. Yes, that’s right, it’s Spanish for “the Tongue,” a reference to the district’s shape, its preponderance of eateries serving tongue meat and the active imagination of the dude behind the Burrito Justice blog.

Perhaps most chilling, to me at least, was the closing line:

“I wouldn’t say it’s a hipster thing,” Johnny0 said. “I think it’s what happens when hipsters grow up and have kids … they come and live in La Lengua.”

The first time I met Johnny0, I invited him to brunch the next day. He said he was busy doing dad stuff. Then he said sorta waved his fingers in front of me and said in a spooky voice, “I am your fuuuuuture!”

This has haunted me ever since.
