I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that Hellen Jo, longtime Mission art babe known for her brilliant illustrations of gnarly ghosts, Lady Gaga, Kristen Schaal, and other amazing stuff, is moving to Burbank to work on Regular Show. The good news is you get to buy all of her cool stuff this weekend:

Yes, I know garage sales happen all the time, but this one has a pretty flyer and you can bet your ass there will be kick-ass comics, crafts, guitars with all sorts of pointless switches all over them, and probably more conventional practical items like toaster ovens.

Also, if you’ve got an eye on Hellen’s bitchin’ pigeon helmet (which will also be up for grabs), you’d better move fast. I’ll bet you’re not the only one:

Holy shit. I guess this is kinda old, but back in February these crazy MFs scaled the Golden Gate Bridge, hung out for a while, took EPIC pictures, and left without getting caught (or sleeping with the fishes). Here’s a snip of their riveting tale:

I had a sure grip on the cable but could not pull my self up. My mind raced. I was about to lose my holy grail because I had let myself get out of shape. My partner in crime dropped from the rail in exhaustion and warned of approaching vehicles. Adrenaline kicked in and I willed myself onto the orange cable.  “Just go!” she yelled.

Our favorite irate aged mission fella brings us this news:

Last night, all the palm trees at the 16th Street & Mission BART Plazas were sawed-off — both sides. Don’t know why, but the BART website says that, back in 2009, one tree had to be removed because it was dead. These trees did not appear to be dead, but it might have been a case of vermin control — they were hosts to hordes of pigeons — in which case, blame Swan.

Anyone know the real reason why the trees were extracted? My first guess would have been coconut related injuries, but I doubt these oversized monocots were fruit-bearing.

In 2009 at the Mission Streetscape Public Workshops, they said that BART planted them without considering the root systems, so they were stunted and going to be removed at some point, likely in preparation for re-doing the BART station. But, that might have been 24th Street – I can’t remember.

Local comedian Emily Heller has a cool radio show called “Slumming It” on FCC Free Radio with Marcello Fama.

Turns out she’s pals with local singer Karina Denike, who you might know from the ’90s 3rd wave ska band Dance Hall Crashers, and had a great interview with her on a recent show. Hear them chat about the golden age of East Bay punk, opening for MC Hammer, how the Rite Spot launched a ton of awesome bands, and the Dance Hall Crashers mysterious lez-appeal.

On a related note, Sunday we went out to the Riptide to see Karina Denike sing with the Cottontails. Allan kept raving about the DHC’s remix of Rancid’s “I Wanna Riot” (which she didn’t remember and actually turned out to be the Stubborn Allstars… OOPS), Karina told us a pretty crazy story about getting mugged in the Mission in the ’90s, and we’re pret-ty sure Fat Mike from NOFX was hanging out for a minute.

P.S. Karina plays with her own band 2nd Sundays at the Rite Spot Cafe, and all this ’90s talk is making me want to cruise down San Pablo bumping “Give ‘em the Boot Vol. 1″.

• Triple vomit all the way, what does it mean?
• Everyone was freaked out about getting the flu from pigs; we all turned out fine

• People were still saying “Hipster” and “Douchebag” to describe pretty much everyone they didn’t like

• Noxious gas cloud descended on the Mission. In retrospect, it likely originated from the bathroom at Pops

So, you think this whole anti-gentrification thing is unique to the Mission? Think again. It’s happening in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, as you can see in this found racist rant accusing a loosely-defined group of people of being racist.

i don’t know, man astutely points out:

Pilsen is named for the Czech town of Plzen — Pilsner, a delicious type of lager beer is, too — because it was populated mainly by Czech immigrants in the early part of last century. As Czechs made a better life for themselves and probably moved out of the city to the suburbs, Chicago’s growing Latino population moved in.

What we have here is a chicken-or-the-egg problem. Who’s the most entitled to live anywhere? Amoebas floating in primordial soup, I reckon.

Anyway, I’m glad Asian hipsters are off the hook (not that I am one).
