Not to be outdone by Bernal Hill, the window display at Gravel & Gold has acquired its own sexy succulent.

I’m impressed by the cyclist who just rode down Valencia with a small couch on his back. I also find it an odd transportation decision.

Pretty impressive!
You may know from ‘Deep from his alter ego Trikeasaurus, or his residential parklet occupied by a topiary triceratops. Well, here’s yet another notch on his resume of heartwarming neighborhood quirks: ‘Deep is getting hitched today at noon, during Sunday Streets, in his parklet! (And I hear they’re giving out cupcakes to passersby.)
For schedules and more information, check out Kim and ‘Deep’s wedding Tumblr. And did I mention that today is Sunday Streets?
Here’s a thing that’s happening this weekend: Chrome Industries is holding their first ever bike swap in Dolores Park on Sunday. Perfect time to get rid of all those drop bars you swapped out for bullhorns, or all of those brakes you don’t actually use. I hear there’s free beer!
I love the Olympics. They’re campy and absurd, and they’re a glimpse into the superhuman race breeding amongst us. Synchronized swimming or rhythmic gymnastics, anyone? What about that one that involves running, swimming, fencing, riding a horse, and shooting a gun? I call that one “Survival”.
The London 2012 Olympics start this Friday. So which local bars can we watch them in? Tell me, and I’ll compile a list. Ready, set, go! USA!
Did you make it to the Renegade Craft Fair this weekend? If not, you missed out on all things bird, wolf, owl, tentacle, Native American, artisan, laser cut, geometric, and mustachioed — as well as these tiny plush tallboys, made by Let’s Be Friends, who also carried doll-sized Moleskines and messenger bags. Adorbs!
If you can’t already tell, I’m a huge fan of local typographer James T. Edmondson and his contributions to the world of letters. Well, James has done it again. Mission Script is a tribute of the hand-painted signage of the liquor stores, taquerias, doughnut shops, and bodegas of our neighborhood, and it’s the first typeface to come out of Lost Type’s Mission Collection.
You can download Mission Script (and a bunch of other snazzy typefaces) over at Lost Type. And do consider making a contribution if you’re really going to use it.
Earlier today, Andrew stuck his nose up at a Korean rendition of our official neighborhood dish. Fortunately, that burrito is not representative of all burrito offerings in Korea.
This is a burrito from the Taco Habanero truck in Hongdae, and it was one of my favorite things in Seoul (and there are a lot of good things in Seoul). This wonderful grilled tortilla pocket is filled with seasoned rice, kimchi, Korean BBQ, and the tastiest habanero salsa.
Yeah yeah, I know what you’re thinking. It’s not a burrito. It doesn’t look like a burrito, at least not in the cylindrical form we all know and love. And yeah, there’s no beans. And there’s all that Korean stuff. Fine. Geometry, semantics, and content aside though, this “burrito” was so freakin’ delicious.
Here’s the truck, in case you’re ever in Hongdae and happen to work up an appetite.

His name is John Seastrunk, and you’ll recognize his seasonally appropriate handiwork from the windows of Boogaloos, St. Francis, Napper Tandy, a bunch of taquerias, and more. The Bold Italic has just published a piece on him, so you can finally put a name and face to all of that familiar hand-painted lettering. According to the piece, John has been painting signs for over 30 years and has over 120 typefaces memorized!
Read on for more about this unsung local hero.
