The Mission in Polaroids

Over the past year, Polaroid SF has shot 366 photos of San Francisco taken through the lenses of vintage Polaroid Land cameras, and 50 of them are of the Mission (and at least one of them was inspired by one of our blog posts). This month, they’re bringing their project to the walls of Photobooth on Valencia. The show will be up until the 29th, and there will be an opening reception a week from tomorrow on October 19th, 7-10pm.

Press Works on Paper celebrates grand reopening at new location

I used to live down the street from the former Press: Works on Paper, which was quietly tucked away on 22nd and Dolores. It was always lovely to stop in and browse their selection of paper, notebooks, design books, magazines, and vintage office supplies (such as this vintage stapler, which I grew up with and am pretty sure my mom still owns), but it was always quiet.

This week, Press moved its quiet hustle to the bustle of 24th and Folsom, across from Philz and next to the new Sidewalk Juice, and they’re celebrating their grand reopening tonight at 6pm! We hear there will be drinks, fancy cupcakes, and readings.

Raw, unprocessed Soylent Green for sale on Mission Street

There’s cheap socks and gloves to go with them, too.

Two lovely pendants shaped like lovely glass-encased things

Here is a pendant shaped like a pickle jar:

And here’s one shaped like a terrarium!

Adorbs, right? Both are available from the Mission-based Yellow Owl Workshop.

Midnight Mystery Ride this Saturday!

If you’ve never gone on a Midnight Mystery Ride, you’re missing out on one of the most magical free adventures this city has to offer. The mystery route varies each time depending on who hosts it, but the ride always promises to take you through beautiful undiscovered nooks and crannies of the city in the dark before ending in a secret party.

To give you an idea of what’s in store for you, here’s a video that Mission Bicycle produced, of a ride they hosted back in December. (P.S. I’m in this video, nbd.)

Mission Bicycle is hosting another Midnight Mystery Ride this Saturday, September 15, and their general manager Jefferson has promised that it will be “very interesting.” Remember to check back on the Midnight Mystery Ride website later in the week to find out where the secret meetup spot is!

La Rondalla may be hitting on you

In continuing efforts to remind you that they’re still not open (but possibly working on it), La Rondalla has taken to giving out either compliments or tips, depending on who you are:

Um, guilty as charged?

David Byrne bike racks

I know that these aren’t new, but I’m still pretty jealous that New York gets all of these amazing bike racks designed by David Byrne.

Byrne designed each bike rack to be representative of the neighborhood it was installed in. What would these bike racks look like if they were designed for our city?

Four Barrel’s fourth birthday

Tomorrow is 4B4B! (That is, Four Barrel‘s 4th B-day!) There will be free coffee and free food, skee ball just like last year, a photobooth, some animals to touch, and more.

Here’s more about tomorrow’s anniversary festivities from Four Barrel’s manager Nicky Koch:

To celebrate four years of serving the coffee-drinking denizens of San Francisco, Four Barrel will be throwing our annual birthday bash on Wednesday, August 22nd, from 7am to 4pm. As we do every year, we will be giving away free coffee and espresso drinks all day long. And yes: the drinks are 100% free, no joke. We’ve also arranged for a few friends to help us add to the fun: Glass Coat Photo Booth will be setting up one of their free photo booths from 12pm-4pm, and, as always, any photo strips that people leave with us hung on our bathroom photo wall all year. Also, there will be two Skee Ball units in the back for people to square off against one another, courtesy of local Skee Ball champ, Joey the Cat. And at noon, we will be serving free slices of delicious Tartine cake and free scoops of Humphry Slocombe ice cream. For the kids, we’ll have a small petting zoo set up in one of our parklet corrals, courtesy of Little Explorers Mobile Petting Zoo, and, for the lunchtime crowd, Del Popolo, an incredibly beautiful mobile pizza cart, will be posted up outside if people want some food to go along with their lattes. It’s going to be a hoot.

I don’t know about you, but I love hoots — it’s the sound that owls make.

The invisible bicycle helmet?

What started as a school project for these two Swedish designers turned into 7 years of research, 10 million dollars in venture funding, and what might be the hot new solution to helmet hair. I’m not going to spoil it for you, so you should watch the video for yourself. If it works, it’d be pret-ty incredible.
