Pie Baking Contest Takes the Cake

It’s not every day that you can stuff your face with delicious pie without looking like a total piggy, but Sunday provided the perfect opportunity. October 11th marked the 3rd annual pie baking contest hosted by our fave pie shop, Mission Pie. This year’s contest was decided by a panel of distinguished judges; Ruby – Mission High student, Anthony – Anthony’s Cookies, Jessica Appelgren – last year’s winner, and Krystin & Karen – owners of Mission Pie.

The competition was fierce this year, but in the end Finch Linden walked away with “Best Looking Pie” (apple), Lauren Nilson won “People’s Choice” (salmon/ potato), Emily Montgomery grabbed “Best Savory” (tomato/ corn) and “Best in Show” went to Kurt Gross (apple/cranberry). Congrats to the winners!

But the big news of the day was that our state senator Mark Leno swung by and presented Mission Pie with a business of the year award. Well done guys!
Can’t wait for next year, I’m already drooling in anticipation!

Ladies and Gentlemen, We Have a Wiener

Whether you’re a hipster or a bro, a vegan or a carnivore, one thing we all can agree on is that wiener dogs are effin’ awesome!

Dogado 1

If you happened to be at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday, you witnessed quite possibly the cutest racing in history, The Northern California Wiener National Series. Yes, this is a real thing. It’s a dachshund racing championship sponsored by Wienerschnitzel, where local wiener dogs compete for cash prizes and of course, bragging rights.

The wiener…ahem, cough, I mean, winner (sorry guys, I had to do it) was a sprightly pup from Fremont named Jessey. Man oh man was that dog fast!

Dogado 7

The next race is in November, but a representative for the event said that they need to find a location and fast. Methinks our own beloved Dolores Park would make a perfect racetrack for the little guys. Anyone out there willing to help make it go down?

If you can’t get enough wiener dogs, you can see more little friends here.

Katharine & Ryan Still Got the Goods

Forget all the hoopla about Quince opening up last night.  Who gives a fig when the real phoenix rising is none other than our beloved Katharine and Ryan formerly of Broken Record fame? The two wonder-chefies made their triumphant return to the SF food scene last night as guest chefs at Mission Street Food.  After a short sabbatical and BBQ recon mission, the duo are back kicking ass and taking names.  Everything we had was super delish and we were lucky enough to get some unbelievable bacon palmiers for the road. Score! Look for Kat and Ry’s new restaurant which will be run out of Bruno’s kitchen in about a week or two.  We’re just dying for one of their pulled pork sandwiches! Mmmmmm.

Oh yeah, if you haven’t heard the news already, M.S.F. is now accepting reservations!

Some folks hadn't heard about the new reservation system.

These dudes didn’t know that M.S.F. was taking reservations.

Katherine doin' her thang.

Katharine whippin’ up the good stuff.
