Babies?

The Waiting Game

I was walking from Potrero to the Mission yesterday and came across an empty car seat, facing out toward my neighborhood and I wondered, is it true? Are babies coming to the Mission? It’s a neighborhood that is no stranger to change. The Irish settled here to raise families, as did the Latin Americans, but the newer wave of artsy-hip kids mostly came on their own, leaving the idea of parenthood back home with their parents. But now, as their random hookups start moving in and they can stave off adulthood no more, will they decide to start their families here, or move out to the suburbs to make way for the next group?

Disaster morning

Well, it looks like Godzilla may have come through after all.

This morning around 9:15 a fire hydrant at 20th and Folsom showered El Faro. It has since been fixed.

(thanks, Chris!)

Then a tree came down onto a parked car on Valencia between 19th and 20th.

(thanks, Russell!)

And below, some pics by Rob and his eyewitness account. (which curiously does not mention Godzilla)

“It happened sometime around 11:40… during the scheduled construction at the Mission Playground facility… Somehow, no one was hurt, despite its smashing a parked car and falling into the south bound lane. Construction workers looked pretty pissed and nervous, although, appearing to be just as confused as to what caused it.”

(thanks Rob!)

UPDATE: Just realizing this may have less to do with Godzilla, and more to do with the aliens that crash landed behind Borderlands a few months ago.

Uh oh, this does not look good

Godzilla's Coming

I have bad news. I recently picked up some intel through my usual sources and it looks like there’s a chance that Godzilla is coming to town. But don’t run through the streets in a hot panic just yet, I’ve got a call in to some inside experts at Quantico to find out if he’s angry and wants to destroy everything, or is just in the mood to sample some of our famously overpriced coffee. I will let you know more as news comes in. Unless it’s top secret, in that case I’ll just tell you that everything is fine and not to worry.

UPDATE: Sorry folks, false alarm. No need to worry, everything’s cool. Go back to business as usual.

Mission poster

Adrian Covert‘s awesome depiction of the Mission, with your favorite park highlighted. I’ve spent a lot of time drawing and painting the fronts of these buildings, but I like that in this piece most of the real buildings represented are depicted instead by their rooftops.

You can pick up prints at Fayes Video or Serendipity.
