Anti-gentrification protest marches up Valencia and its brand-new condos

Displaying a bright “Class War 2.0″ banner, the group marched peacefully up Valencia and then turned on 22nd before stopping in front of Lolo Cevicheria for an impromptu rally.  The speaker made an interesting point regarding rent control that I had failed to previously consider.  Namely, that while families without the fortune of living in rent-controlled apartments are forced to move after their rent gets dramatically increased, people who do actually dwell in rent-controlled spots suffer from landlords who refuse to fix anything except for the most necessary (read: legally-required) repairs.

Many families are terrified of even asking their landlords to perform important maintenance within their apartments out of fear that they will notice some sort of technicality within their living space that would provide means for eviction.  Imagine dealing with that constant level of fear every day of your life, where any sort of misstep could be used against you.

Sadly, I just see this situation getting worse and worse.

Fred Armisen has a system for greeting random people who recognize him

According to MM reader Chino, he’s a “stop and chatter and a direction changer” (and he likes Ramen):

We crossed paths outside of JapanTown in SF.  He saw our excitement when we recognized him and said ‘You guys wanna go this way with me’ We switched routes and chilled. He gave us an opportunity to banter & didn’t rush it at all. The whole thing was really human & made our day. Thanks Fred!

Gotta admit that I’m kind of surprised he’s not a stand-in-liner.  For the record, if anyone recognizes me on the street, I’m a “turn around and run away shrieking-er.”

(Thanks Chino!)

How long ago did Ribity tag my neighbor’s trash bin?

Just noticed this the other day, and while I can’t recall ever seeing it before, I’m also not constantly examining my neighbor’s garbage. Usually.

So how long has it been there? Does this mean that Ribity’s back???

IT IS A MYSTERY 👻

What is poop?

Poop is art. If you don’t believe me, just ask the wall of butts at ATA.

Tonight at Adobe: Mujeres Sin Compromiso

We’ve been having those warm Mission nights all week (you know, the ones where you somehow find yourself walking around in shorts and a t-shirt at midnight), and what better way to take advantage of the excitement in the air than with a party at Adobe featuring a bunch of rad local women photographers:

A collection of Bay Area women photographers without boundaries. Exploring photography’s particular ability to describe and convey emotions. Whether referencing an immediately identifiable emotion or one that is conceptual and abstract, each photograph encourages the viewer to contemplate the emotional context in which the photo was taken.

Goat tote

It’s not everyday that you see a guy with a billy goat beard toting a lifelike goat (with a billy goat beard). Also, that’s a lot of strollers.

Toddler carrying mannequin legs down Valencia

While not quite as mesmerizing as Helen’s iconic “Toddler dragging a saw,” this little guy’s still got loads of panache.  Let’s just hope that he doesn’t settle for Nizario’s cardboard fare and instead treks just a few doors down to Arinell so he can enjoy the best slice of pizza in the city.

UPDATE!!! Helen is way better at headlines than me.  Here’s her glorious take on the situation:

Help Primo find a new wall for his cats!

To replace this fallen masterpiece that was on the side of Esta Noche.  Says Primo:

I’d actually really like to do another one and I’m wondering if anyone in my network knows of equally large sized walls they’d be interested in having something like this painted on. This mural was in Rondel alley but unfortunately was not part of the wall we had permission to paint so it’s gone now, but it was a great experience for me and I want to do it again, maybe several times, so if you know a place, let me know !!!  . Thanks @wallspace for the original hookup btw

Who’s got some walls???

Rad show at the Makeout Room this Sunday!

With Wing Dam visiting from Baltimore and featuring members of Dan Deacon’s recording outfit, as well as local bands Balms and Couches (fresh off their recent tour)!

Damn, with Last Nite returning and cool shows happening again, the Makeout Room is starting to make its case for best bar in the Mission!  Not to mention Primo holding down Tuesdays with Slow Jams for like FOREVER.

That tinsel ceiling seals it.
