La Corde at the Knockout Tonight!

In case you were wondering about what all those crows have been doing in the Mission lately, it’s obvious from this flyer that they’re raging about the Alcoholocaust show at the Knockout tonight.  If you’re not doing anything on this fine Tuesday evening, check out my band La Corde at one of your favorite Mission bars/venues.  We’re playing last after two-piece punk brigade Culture Corpse and Oakland stalwarts High Castle, so come on down and check out some local tunes (but please leave the Marina party bus at home).

Obscenely Tall Photographer

Further research revealed that:

1) No, he was not wearing stilts.

2) Does not play professional basketball.

Nonetheless, just imagine the possible angles!  Sir, if you have a flickr account full of birds-eye views, kindly send it our way.

Obscenely Tall Dancer

This dude was so busy freaking out all the children with his fancy stilt-work, he had to leash his attack puppy to a fire hydrant to guard the Airstream (and prevent unnecessary hipster maulings).  Yes, it’s being towed by an Acura SUV with a kayak.

Let’s see, I’m just going to categorize this one as “Life in the Mission” and call it a day.

Global Warming is Real

Amiable DJ Shutdown

We witnessed most of the most pleasant DJ-police interactions we’ve ever seen in Dolores Park over the weekend.  Look at those wide smiles on the faces of everyone involved!  The whole scene lasted less than a minute, with the officer walking up and having a word followed by the DJs immediately complying.

Everyone must have been pretty techno’d out because catcalls of “Fuck the Police” were muted and sparse.  Or maybe it was just because the sun was going down (albeit epically).

Saturday Sunset Epic Once Again

I happen to walk by this spot a lot, and I’ve even made a post almost exactly like this one in past, but yesterday’s sunset was just too amazing to ignore.  Couple this with our amazing summertime weather while the rest of the country is freezing over, and San Francisco once again solidifies its claim as the most jealousy-inducing location in the United States.  Take that East coast!

Go watch your Superbowl, America.  We’re gonna be outside ALL DAY.

Vietnamese Street Food on Valencia Tonight!

Chúc Mừng Năm Mới!  And what better way to celebrate than with Vietnamese Street Food?

So inspired by the sidewalk dining and street food we ate in Vietnam, we have recreated the experience here in our hometown — complete with small tables, even smaller stools, fresh Vietnamese condiments, Cambodian pop music, and delicious food of course! We’re serving up Vietnamese comfort foods such as stuffed chicken wings with a thai chili sauce and crab sautéed glass noodles.

Drop by our terrace at a private residence near 20th and Valencia to grab some grub on the go or take a seat at one of our mini-tables to do it up, Saigon-style. We’ll tweet our exact location on February 3rd; follow @littleknockand @kitchensidecar to receive the tip.

I might not be able to make this tonight, but I expect a detailed report from the field, readers!

Cherry Blossom Drama

Remember, it is NOT okay to pick these cherry blossom branches.  Nobody cares that you are planning the most romantic Valentine’s Day ever for your significant other by trying to recreate the opening sequence from Samurai Shodown in your bedroom.  Please respect the amazing cherry blossom clip art that was created specially for this informative sign.

There are better ways to get cherry blossoms, folks, and it’s not from these embattled trees on 19th Street @ York.

Potrero Not a Good Travel Option This Morning (Because of GRENADES)

image

Since it happens to be closed off to traffic from Mariposa to 19th. Something is going down near the 18th Street intersection, as there are firetrucks, cruisers, and even DPT Cushmans on the scene, in addition to that auspicious black truck-van.  So, unless you prefer to be late in whatever endeavors you undertake this morning, try to find another route.

UPDATE!!! Apparently this closure was due to the fact that GRENADES were found there!  Too much Call of Duty, folks.

Portrait of the Artist as a Preschooler

Even James Joyce needed to start somewhere.  In case you didn’t know, there’s a unique little preschool here in the Mission whose mission is to prepare children to always respect and exude creativity through art, music, and other non-traditional methods (like constructing forts and giant robots).  If you’re a little confused, fear not, since they will be hosting a documentary at Brava Theater demonstrating exactly what makes the Buen Dia Family School and its methods so special.   Check out all the details here.

All I know is that I wish I had the chance to construct giant robots in preschool!

Watch Out For This Flexible Thief!

Loyal reader Tom C. was walking down the street when he noticed this peculiar sight:

I caught this guy breaking into and stealing from a Nissan parked at Harrison and 23rd, I took the pic and called 911. Which kinda pissed him off. He told me to give him my phone, which I declined to do and after some strong words, some scuffling and punch to the back of my head he made off with his lady friend down treat towards 24th.

Geez Tom, we hope you’re alright!  Stay alert out there, everyone!

UPDATE!!!  Tom delves into detail:

Here’s what happened, this thief and his girlfriend were walking along Harrison @ 22nd. I was walking my dog behind them, he threw something up in the air and let it crash on the ground… and kept walking. I had a look at what he had “dropped” and it was a GPS unit. I keep walking along with my dog, stalling at every tree, bush, sign post whatever so I could see what they were up to. He was walking real close to the parked cars, scoping them out I guess. Then, they stopped and started being all making out with each other. I walked past and turned the corner at 23rd.

I stopped for a second then headed back to see what they were doing. The guy had disappeared and she was sitting on the sidewalk applying makeup. I kept walking and saw the Nissan with the window smashed out and the guy inside going through the glovebox. I asked him what he was doing, “terracing” he said. I then asked him what that meant and he said “I don’t know, why you got a problem?” I snapped a quick pic of him climbing out, why he didn’t just open the door I don’t know, but he left with his girlfriend down 23rd.

I called 911 and also walked down 23rd. That’s when the guy went crazy. He saw me on the phone and charged up to me demanding the phone, saying he wanted to know who I was calling, he told me he was going to kill me if I didn’t give him the phone. I told him it wasn’t going happen and put it in my pocket, the SFPD was still on the line. So, I’m holding the guy at arms length and keeping my dog back with the other hand. He swings at me and lands one on the back of my head. “I know people, I’m gonna kill you, you’re fucking with the wrong guy” etc. They turned down Treat towards 24th and vanished. The Police showed up and took a report. The owner of the Nissan showed up and thanked me for what I did.

I’ve seen this thief on my street 3 or 4 times, he lives in the neighborhood. I showed the owner of my corner market the photo and he said that his name is Robert and his girlfriend is Claudia. Hopefully this guy will get caught eventually.

Would I get involved again? Definitely. I’d just be a bit more stealthy about it.
