DIY bicycle lane

Despite having ridden through here more times than we can remember, we still can’t quite decide if this is the work of some enterprising cyclist with his own paintbrush or if the city merely misplaced their bicycle lane stencils (or gave too many away as home art pieces).

Examine this BICYKL lane as you roll back to the Mission using the raddest bike lane in the city and decide for yourself!

4th of July burger dogs

It’s what you do when you have a bunch of ground beef to fashion into burgers, yet are only stocked with hot dog buns.  True American ingenuity.

Free at the 6th Annual Pop’s Tricycle Races yesterday, which I have a feeling you’ll be hearing more about soon . . .

Lost Weekend sunny sidewalk sale

What a beautiful sunny day in the Mission!  Everyone’s out and about walking around, and the sidewalks are alive with all sorts of interesting excitement.  Do yourself a favor and walk down Valencia or 24th and you won’t regret it!

Also, fans of cinema should be sure to stop by Lost Weekend video to check out their sidewalk sale.  They’ll probably do it again tomorrow too!  There’s definitely some gems in there–I came away with Murder by Death starring the legendary Peter Falk (and I guess Truman Capote)!!!

Bicycle rack etiquette

Am I overreacting here or is this a legitimate complaint? Keep in mind this has been going on for months, and I assumed he would eventually figure it out, but the lack of adaptation compelled me to do some playful prodding.

See it bigger here.

Wall of surf

Apparently they have rad murals too in Half Moon Bay.  Love the corner perspective!

Hard French Pride at Public Works winner!

Congratulations to Cyd for this epic photo that pretty perfectly sums up the Hard French experience and serves as the winner of our free ticket photo contest!  We’re sure you and your friend will have a similarly magnificent time this Sunday, because Pride is finally upon us this weekend and Hard French is ready to celebrate like never before with a whole lineup of DJs and other fun stuff in additon to special guest Erase Errata!

And for the rest of you who might not remember all the details, check them out here!

Remember the tooth!

That’s what this is, right?  Spotted on Valencia by 23rd.

Oh, that reminds me!  I have a dentist appointment tomorrow.  Thanks tooth art guy!

The raddest bike lane in the city

It makes you feel like you’re riding your bike on the freeway without, you know, actually riding on the freeway.  It used to be a bit more dangerous too, but recent lane striping and cycling logos now warn 55mph cars that bicycles will be on the road too.  Regardless, the feeling you get while zipping down the ramp and taking in that Mission Terrace-style view is well worth it.

What are your favorite bike lanes in the city?

Fried pickle party

Anyone with the idea to take advantage of one of the nicest evenings of the year by enjoying a relaxing margarita on the Latin American Club patio was in for quite the surprise last night, as a pop up fried pickle party was already in full effect, filling the sidewalk with festive pickled revelers.  At the center of it all was this beige Vanagon (stocked with the most charming mobile kitchen you can imagine) from which exceedingly enticing aromas wafted.

Curious to discover what the fuss was all about, I soon learned that the young woman in charge was offering tempura fried pickles (!!!), so naturally I had to indulge.  Served with spicy garlic aoili and spicy soy sauce (served in a cute little fish bottle), the soft tempura crunch on the outside mingled perfectly with the soft, hot, zesty pickle within.  Garnished with some thin seaweed strips, it made for the perfect snack on a rare warm mid-summer night.

Build your own Parklet

I’m not exactly sure what’s going on here, but to the naked eye it appears that an interstitial parklet is in the midst of completion.  Now, this isn’t your normal parklet that replaces a public street parking spot, but rather a couple of narrower planter boxes that cover the small swath of red curb between driveways.  Notice how the planter also contains very similar plants to those on the sidewalk and you get an idea of the consistency planned.  Technically, the space directly in front of the driveway should be usable at the discretion of the homeowner, and if he or she wants to have a personal parklet and incorporate any nearby red area where parking would already be prohibited, it seems like the city is on board.

I may be mistaken, but I have a feeling this is in front of Deep’s house (the guy with the speaker bicycle), and this project would seem to resonate perfectly with his DIY ethos.  I wonder if this will start off a trend where homeowners on Valencia all decide to turn their driveways into parklets!
