Barefoot bike ride

image

It’s one thing to walk around in this city without shoes, but it’s quite another thing altogether to actually ride a bike without wearing anything on your feet. The craziest part of this situation was that it was 9pm as we were deboarding the train.

I asked the woman in question, “Do you always ride around without shoes?” She replied in the affirmative and added with a smile, “It really doesn’t feel that bad!” I considered this for a moment before countering, “But isn’t it cold?”

“Yes,” she admitted while casting her glance downward. “It is cold.”

Knife fight on 24th Street

From our pal Lauren Mc:

I just called 911 for a knife fight on 24th street. Suspect has been apprehended. Fighting bystander effect one day at a time.

Bystander effect is no joke! I watched 30 people see this going down and NO ONE was on a phone calling the police.

And her friends reminisce:

-I saw two dudes at 24th and Shotwell fighting once. One had a cobblestone and the other had a knife. Cops broke it up bearing shotguns.

-My neighbor called 911 for a knife fight between two woman on mission street. Here’s the shocker… The lady who got stabbed told the cops that my neighbor stabbed her. He was taken in and released few hours later. Some crazy ass people out there…

Nice work Lauren! Good thing there are no Lululemon stores in the Mission!

Mission Holiday Block Party Tonight!

If you haven’t taken care of your holiday shopping yet, what better way than to take a look at some of your favorite local neighborhood businesses tonight as 40 different places from 14th all the way to 26th Street will be showing off their stuff from 5-10pm!  If memory serves from past incarnations, some places will probably be serving (free!) drinks while you shop too!

Check out the Facebook page here.

BART everywhere

What if BART actually ran everywhere you needed to go?  Imagine getting on the train in the Mission and going to grab some spicy noodle soup from the Richmond, then taking it to Petaluma to catch a show at the Phoenix!  Or going wine-tasting in Napa without worrying about a designated driver?  That’s the idea behind this provocative BART diagram by Jake Coolidge.

And as long as we’re dreaming, let’s get rid of the carpet, extend service to 24 hours, and have a dedicated bike car too!

Happy piñata room

This looks like the scariest place to spend the night EVER.

Mural Missions

You’ve undoubtedly wandered past many murals here in the Mission.  Perhaps you’ve wondered how they originally got there, or perhaps you don’t even give a shit.  Should your proclivities tend towards the former, however, here are two distinct behind-the-scene looks of how it all goes down.  Above, there’s some serious ladder action going on for a mural in progress on the side of Casa Guadalupe at 26th Street, with more pics of the process here.  Below, check out a sweet timelapse of a commissioned mural now residing by the corner of Bartlett and 24th.

Study hard, then try it yourself (at home)!

Kickstart the Lost Weekend Cinecave

As one of the oldest independent video stores in the city, Lost Weekend has not only served as one of best places to find the perfect esoteric film to take home for the night, but also as a community hub for cinema enthusiasts to meet and mingle, find some of the raddest shirts around, and even see screenings of classic favorites.  In the interest of expanding their capacity for this last point, the crew at Lost Weekend have revealed their ambitous plans to install a Cinecave in the basement which will serve as an underground screening room and community space for film!  With the demise of places like the Red Vic, we definitely need more places like this.

Sorority life

College can be a pretty fun experience, and sometimes it’s a little tough to let go and embrace the real world when it’s all over.  That seems to be the case with this Craigslist post from a recent graduate:

Wanted: One big room, full of girlfriends – w4ww – 22 (mission district)

Trendy ladies of the Mission, listen up. I am at my wit’s end. I am a recent transplant to this city from Seattle (don’t I get cool points for that already?) and after four months of hanging with the same three people (also, all transplants), I am at a lost as to how to make new girlfriends. Listen up Carries, Samanthas, Mirandas and Charlottes of the world, I want one big a$$ room full of bada$$ girlfriends. I want to form the trendiest girl group that will knock all other Mission girl groups out of the park. I want us to form the trendiest group where we go biking, brunching, happy-houring, getting trendy a$$ coffee together-ing.

I want it all, and I want to be YOUR best gal pal.

Full listing after the jump…

Four bikes, two locks

The stakes have been raised once again!  This clever use of geometry takes the previously-featured 2 bikes, 1 lock formula to the next power by exponentially increasing the parties involved.  While not necessarily as efficient as the aforementioned 3 bikes, 1 lock solution, this nonetheless makes for quite the sidewalk spectacle.  Which one gets the grand prize for bike lock ingenuity?  I will leave that to you, gentle reader.

Of course, one thing is for sure:  This is way better than 2 bikes, no locks!  No way I’ll be able to teach any lessons in this case…

Bender’s ketchup gumballs

Well, not exactly a ketchup gumball, but a gumball-sized container of ketchup.  Our pal Laurie explains:

i put in 25 cents into the gumball machine at Bender’s and got this little plastic thing full of ketchup. not the weirdest thing that’s happened tonight, but maybe the most fucked up

Perhaps this is their way of charging extra for condiments?  Regardless, that’s a lot of Leann Rimes songs available for karaoke!
