Contest: Learn how to fix a flat (finally)

Hey you!  Yeah you there, the one with the funny haircut.  Do you know how to fix a flat on your bicycle?  Whaaaaat???  Why not?!?  What are you gonna do when you’re in the middle of nowhere on a beautiful ride and you hear that instantly recognizable hiss emanating from your tire?

Luckily, your friends at Mission Bicycle have the answer:

At this hands-on workshop, we’ll start with the basics, then give you the tricks and secrets of fast and easy flat fixing.
At the 11 AM session, we’ll get jacked on Fayes coffee and Pepple’s vegan donuts.  At the 5 PM session we’ll savor fresh Firebrand pretzels and ice cold beer (Anchor Steam and IBC).
We’ll even send you home with a set of our favorite tire levers.
We end the session with a group ride – a tour of the Mission District’s 11 bike related businesses.
One last thing.  No spectators allowed.  Nobody admitted without a bike.  Come prepared to get your hands dirty.

Of course, it wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t have two (2) free tickets to give away! All you have to do is tell a little story in the comments about a time when not knowing how to fix a flat really ruined your day. The contest closes at 5pm on Wednesday and entries will be judged on merit.

And if you just want to be sure that you get in on this, you can also register for the class here.

Meet some chefs, eat their food!

If you’ve ever wanted to meet the likes of some of the city’s most popular chefs like Michael Gaines of Flour + Water or Bar Agricole’s Brandon Jew, now’s your chance as they happen to be getting together with some other notables at the Commonwealth Club next Thursday to dish on current trends and styles in a rowdy panel discussion.  Of course, it wouldn’t be fair if you didn’t get to try the food as well, so the fun continues the following Monday as they each collaborate on a special 5-course pre-fixe dinner for you and the rest of the guests!

What do a giraffe and an apatosaurus (brontosaurus?) have in common?

Now if we’re talking about a brachiosaurus, that’s an entirely different matter!

And don’t forget that today is Official Kitten Sleep Appreciation Day!

Remember to support your local video store!  And this one too!

The Chipmunks love La Mejor Bakery

And I love it too!  Perhaps it’s the location and delightful panaderia aroma wafting out every time I pass by on my way home from work, or maybe it’s the fact that there’s always a bunch of dudes watching soccer in there, but there’s something about this place that gets me.

What’s your favorite panaderia spot?

FRGMNTS hijinks

I haven’t been to an art show in quite a while (I know, Philistine), but this stuff caught my eye enough to make me want to check it out tomorrow! I’m always a sucker for mesmerizing line formations and outdated textbooks (I found a Creationist Biology one from the 80s once…oh man), and these two interests will both be on display in fine fashion over at Gallery Hijinks this Saturday from 6-10pm.

I don’t know even know what’s appropriate to leave outside anymore. I mean, I can understand furniture and pots and things like that, but leaving your secondhand pantry out on the sidewalk for adventurous souls to test their gastronomic fortitude?

Cyclists: Something else you can do when someone yells at you from their car

Give their rear window a little lovetap with the Freedom Hammer, and I guarantee that’s the last time they ever yell at a cyclist.

Bike racks of Davis are tanks

Especially when compared to the flimsy protection offered by their Valencia St. counterparts.  I count nine intended spots to lock up bikes, and the imposing architecture makes for plenty of other opportunities to find purchase should they be full.  Let’s see a car try to take that out!

SOPA: Not just something delicious you can get on 24th St.

You may have noticed that many of your favorite websites are blacked out today in protest of SOPA, the epicly-clueless internet regulatory legislation currently making the rounds in Congress.  If this insanity somehow ends up passing, then any site that has comments, a forum, video streaming, or user content in any form could be blocked in the US, removed from search engines, and thus effectively destroyed on the basis of a single errant comment left by a reader.

That means that any one of you comment trolls (you know who you are) could inadvertently get Mission Mission shut down for one of your typically vile statements!  Lucky for us, MM reader Joey concocted this handy dandy flow chart to help explain all you need to know and what you can do about this business.

Check it out here.
