The three amigos of samba want to know. Seriously, they’re tired of Elite Sports on Mission always being out of size 12′s!

Jay left our delightful neighborhood for LA a few years ago to pursue his artistic passion by creating one of my favorite TV shows ever, the hilarious Bob’s Burgers. Now he’s back for the weekend to show off some of the other rad stuff that been oozing from his imagination, and you can see it all for yourself tonight over at Fecal Face Gallery here in the Mission!
Not content to merely infiltrate your eyeballs, he’ll also be invading your auditory cortex the very next night along with his former partner-in-crime Josh Yule at the night they both started way back before he left: Smithsfits at the Knockout! And check it out, they’re giving away Smithsfits pins to the first 50 people who show up!
See you there!
All of your nostalgic comments pertaining to the demise of Giant Value seems to have elicited a similar reaction from distinguished reader David, who contacted us with a blast from the past:
All this recent talk of thieves on roofs and yesteryear’s Mission (Value Giant) makes me think of Crackers, that 80s B movie caper flick starring Donald Sutherland and a young Sean Penn and set on 24th and Alabama, right where Discolandia would later come and go. Recently found the whole movie on YouTube. Really fun to pick out the shops that are still here (hey Casa Lucas!).
Wow, he’s right! And look, just down the street is La Palma (only the best place to buy tortillas en todo el mundo)! If the avocados at Casa Lucas are sometimes 5 for a dollar these days, I wonder how cheap they were in the 80s? Anyway, let us know what other spots are to be found after you watch the whole thing here:

Our pal Todd from Bernalwood sent us a tip about a situation that didn’t exactly turn out as planned for an aspiring ninja:
Getting reports from a friend who lives there. Thief jumped a fence, then took a stand on a roof on Alabama St, threatening to jump. Police scanner says two hostage negotiators were on the scene. He was just taken into custody.
Reports that the two negotiators were in fact Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey remain unconfirmed.
UPDATE from Lysol Tony on our FB page:
I live at 25th and Florida, a man snuck into my house to hide from the cops. My roommate came home, opened the door to her room and the dude said “don’t scream!” She screamed, roommates ran out of the house, I followed because the cops were yelling at us to get out. 2 hours later he’s still on a roof on Alabama.
Lyft vehicles are the ultimate hybrids: taxi, car, and pedestrian, ALL AT THE SAME TIME!
Perhaps this is revenge for PARKing Day?
The Hard French Winter Ball is rapidly approaching, and while there’s still a few tickets available, the deadline to nominate your 2013 Hard French King and Queen is tonight at 6pm:
We’re looking for extraordinary folks from our community who are smart, sweet, artsy, crafty, committed, bold, big-hearted, and of course, self-identifiably sexy and know how to shake their tail feathers! Ultimately, it’s a chance to honor the folks who tend to put in more than they get back, to say thank you for being part of what makes our community so great!
Wait, you don’t even know what the Hard French Winter Ball is all about? Well, just imagine 1000 folks from SF going down to Santa Cruz to party on the boardwalk at the Coconut Grove Grand Ballroom! Check out all the details here, get your tickets here, and don’t forget to nominate those beautiful friends, lovers, crushes, and all-around heroes here!
Our pal Hae Eun just stopped by her favorite neighborhood coffee shop and noticed that the shiny new menus at Philz also display prices that are 50 to 75 cents cheaper than before.
I’d be pretty damned stoked if I was a coffee-drinker! But I’m not, so meh.
Just stick these suckers onto your guns and you’ll be tossing touchdowns and running into endzones like your favorite QB. A word to the wise: you might want to break out the body waxing strips before affixing these on!

One of our favorite neighborhood bartenders recently suffered the misfortune of having his bicycle as well as those of some of his neighbors stolen from their garage in the wee hours of the morning today. What makes the situation even shittier is that it wasn’t even their fault:
Early this morning, my neighbor left his key in our garage door and all of our bikes were stolen. Police report has been filed and we do have insurance but I’d really like to get my bikes back.
- Mission Bicycle Valencia 53cm Frame matte black with Red Anodized B43 Rims, Paul Crank and distinctive Red saddle with white polka dots and upside-down white riser bars.
- Motobecane (naked) 50cm yellow frame with bronze rims and Coaster brake. Yellow addle, 6″ riser bars and basket
- Giant OCR Two 50cm – New soma seat, cinelli stem & drop bars.
Forgetting your key in the lock (or dropping it right in front of your door) is something I ALWAYS worry about accidentally doing, so I know how crappy this must seem. Hopefully someone will spot these before it’s too late! Let them know if you discover anything here.
Update from the owner!
I should add that a neighbor dropped the key while fixing a blown fuse in the middle of the night and at least two of the bikes were locked (there were 7 bikes stolen total).
We’re checking security tapes at the end of the street to try and get an id on the vehicle or its plate.
And yes, that middle bike is hideous by design… it’s my beater bike and I made it stick out like a sore thumb specifically so it wouldn’t get nicked. Oh well.
Also stolen:
- 1012 Cannondale CAAD10 white with red and black accents
- 2008 EAI Bareknuckle green with red Chris King headset
- Masi Special Fixed – metallic blue/green with Rev gold deep V wheelset
It’s been lying dormant during the cold, cold winter, but the Thursday Mission Community Market at 22nd and Bartlett is coming out of hibernation early this year:
For the next three months, we’ll bring you a small but mighty weekly market, so that you don’t have to wait until April to get all your favorites from our wonderful vendors. Starting on January 17th you can enjoy the following goodness, rain or shine:
